St. Paul native Herb Brooks, who coached the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to the "Miracle on Ice," was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the builder category, according to legendsofhockey.net.

Terrance "Dick" Duff, Patrick Roy - the NHL's winningest goaltender - and former NHL chairman of the board Harley Hotchkiss also were elected, according to the Web site.

All four will be inducted in November

(That's for Herb Brooks as well as Patrick Roy, by the way.)

Well deserved and long overdue for Herb.

Glad he coached the Pens for a while and was part of the organization.

Congrats to Roy as well.

I gotta be honest with you -- I'm a little surprised at this. Sure, he was an instrumental part of the 1980 U.S. Olympic gold medal team . . . but his NHL coaching career was marked by mediocrity and chronic instability.

I'm pretty sure he had already been inducted in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame a while back.

I agree that his coaching career was less than stellar, but sometimes a person's worth to a cause, or in this case a sport, cannot be measured in statistics.

Anyone who played for Herb had nothing but good things to say about him as a coach and a person, he was a great teacher of the game and I see more reason for him to be in the Hof than not.

Personal feelings of course.

It's the *Hockey* Hall of Fame, not the NHL Hall of Fame.

He was very important in NCAA hockey as well as Olympic hockey.

Here are the by-laws. You can take it up with the HHOF.
http://www.legendsofhockey.net/html/indByLaw19.htm

"Candidates for election as Honoured Members in the builder category shall be chosen on the basis of their coaching, managerial or executive ability, where applicable, their sportsmanship and character, and their contribution to their organization or organizations and to the game of hockey in general."

Without the Miracle on Ice... the NHL doesn't grow into the South and West in the US, perfectly appropriate as a builder of the game.

I just finished reading one of the best sports books I've ever read -- The Boys of Winter by Wayne Coffey. It's a comprehensive account of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, with detailed player profiles presented within a minute-by-minute account of the game against the Soviet Union.

There's no open animosity shown because the book was written soon after Brooks died in 2003 (in fact, the book opens with the scene at his funeral), but the reader really comes away with a sense that many of those players really hated Brooks. I know from personal experience that he was pretty unstable and quite neurotic.

That's right. That's why players like Vladislav Tretiak who never played a single game in the NHL can be elected.

Yes, that's correct. I guess it's easy to overlook his coaching career at Minnesota, considering how much had gone on in his career from 1980 onward.

I'm sure there's a few players who look at their Stanley Cup rings and curse Scotty Bowman too.

Wow, that's a surprise. I always heard he was tough and a little nutty, but no players I heard ever had a bad word to say about him.

Then again, it's always the "names" for the '80 Olympic team that are doing the talking. (Eruzione, Craig, et al.)
