St. Paul native Herb Brooks, who coached the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to the "Miracle on Ice," was elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame in the builder category, according to legendsofhockey.net.
Terrance "Dick" Duff, Patrick Roy - the NHL's winningest goaltender - and former NHL chairman of the board Harley Hotchkiss also were elected, according to the Web site.
All four will be inducted in November

To go to the HHoF would be my dream vacation.
You need to travel more. ;^)
RIP Herb, your legend is secure
Awesome! A great American.
Hooroy!
(pronounced "Hoo-wah!")
(That's for Herb Brooks as well as Patrick Roy, by the way.)
Pinging you for the hockey list
Thanks to akorahil for posting this and for the ping. Just returned from summer vacation.
Freep mail/ping airborne or Hat-Trick if you want on or off the Hockey Ping List.
Glad he coached the Pens for a while and was part of the organization.
Congrats to Roy as well.
I'm pretty sure he had already been inducted in the U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame a while back.
Anyone who played for Herb had nothing but good things to say about him as a coach and a person, he was a great teacher of the game and I see more reason for him to be in the Hof than not.
Personal feelings of course.
It's the *Hockey* Hall of Fame, not the NHL Hall of Fame.
He was very important in NCAA hockey as well as Olympic hockey.

Here are the by-laws. You can take it up with the HHOF.

"Candidates for election as Honoured Members in the builder category shall be chosen on the basis of their coaching, managerial or executive ability, where applicable, their sportsmanship and character, and their contribution to their organization or organizations and to the game of hockey in general."
It's the Hockey Hall of Fame, not the NHL Hall of Fame.
Without the Miracle on Ice... the NHL doesn't grow into the South and West in the US, perfectly appropriate as a builder of the game.
There's no open animosity shown because the book was written soon after Brooks died in 2003 (in fact, the book opens with the scene at his funeral), but the reader really comes away with a sense that many of those players really hated Brooks. I know from personal experience that he was pretty unstable and quite neurotic.
That's right. That's why players like Vladislav Tretiak who never played a single game in the NHL can be elected.
He was very important in NCAA hockey as well as Olympic hockey.
Yes, that's correct. I guess it's easy to overlook his coaching career at Minnesota, considering how much had gone on in his career from 1980 onward.
I'm sure there's a few players who look at their Stanley Cup rings and curse Scotty Bowman too.
Wow, that's a surprise. I always heard he was tough and a little nutty, but no players I heard ever had a bad word to say about him.
Then again, it's always the "names" for the '80 Olympic team that are doing the talking. (Eruzione, Craig, et al.)
