A series of theft incidents kept Richland County deputies busy Tuesday night, including a burglary attempt in which they got a little help from the victims in capturing a suspect.
Around 11:40 p.m., a couple returned to their apartment at 3421 K. St. and surprised a burglar inside, Richland County Sheriffs Department spokesman Lt. Chris Cowan said.
According to an incident report, Asheka Boone, 21, and Ricardo Lamar Simmons, 24, arrived home and Boone found she could not unlock their door. Simmons said when he tried to unlock the deadbolt, it locked again, so he went to a side window and peeked into the apartment.
He was just in time to see a man fleeing out the front door, the report said. Simmons gave chase and tackled the man, identified as Maverick M. Deasman, 39, of 3245 Lucious Drive Apt. F7.
Deasman and Simmons fought, and Boone came to Simmons aid by grabbing Deasmans feet, the report said. The couple was able to subdue Deasman and call authorities, who arrested him. He was brought to the Palmetto Health Richland emergency department for treatment of injuries from the scuffle, and then was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center on a charge of first degree burglary.
Deasmans car was towed from the scene, the incident report said.
Deputies are still searching for three other suspects in two separate incidents Tuesday night.
Around 10:30 p.m., a man walked into the Kangaroo convenience store at 8200 Two Notch Road, robbed the clerk and fled on foot, Cowan said. There were no injuries, the amount taken was not disclosed, and the burglar has not been found.
Around 11 p.m., a woman driving into her garage at 116 Southlake Court in Northeast Richland found two men waiting for her. The men took her purse and fled on foot. There also are no suspects in that case, Cowan said.
He got off easy. If this was the norm instead of the exception, these crimes would cease. Go citizens...
I'm socked they weren't prosecuted though.
His T-shirt sez "I came to get a TV and all I got was this black eye."
Maverick looks like he's made some bad decisions in his 39 years.
Those deadbolts that re-lock themselves are a dead giveaway.
looks like he was "detained" pretty good.
Too bad they didn't use a baseball bat.
I have always wanted to have a prestigious address like "Lucious Drive". I can just picture it on my letterhead, and trying to keep a straight face while giving out my address on the phone with the pizza order/delivery guy.
Actually we have some of the craziest street/road names around here (Panama City, FL).
My personal favorite is "Linger Longer Road"....it's not far from "Botheration Bayou".
Detained the crap out of him.
My father lives in Panama City Beach on "A" Street
We've got an Easy St. (where a county welfare office is) and an Effen ST. (named for John Kerry).
with victim names like Asheka and Ricardo, the perp will have a hard time playing the race card...
I'm not sure what's so funny about "Lucious Drive", but I once drove by a "Butt Hollow Road".
(were you thinking of Luscious, maybe?)
It's more enjoyable when they shoot them but this is fun too.
If you were to tell him that "Capt Norm" (now retired weather guy from local channel 7) said "Hi", I'd appreciate it.
Looks like he got himself a free session of public humiliation therapy.
I wondered if you were that "Capt. Norm." I watched you for years! You did a great job too.
It is nice to have a neighbor here on FR.
Loooks like his day didn't go too well.
