Idea - proximity alert. Baby seat with sensors. If baby is in the baby seat, and no adults are in the car - baby seat will start beeping. After a few minutes, the baby seat will then page or send a text message to the parent. Failing that, the baby seat will then interface with the vehicle's alarm system and start blinking the lights and periodically honking the horn.

Or when the car is turned off, if the baby seat is occupied, it will beep immediately. Lots of possibilities for interfacing baby seat sensors and the vehicle for the purpose of alerting the adults.

you know, this isn't a bad idea which is sad seeing we may need it since there seem to be some serious neglectful parents out there.

You may be onto something...the driver's "seat belt buckled/unbuckled" sensor could be left on with the ignition off, that is, if it was weight rather than electric-thru-the-seat-belt-coupling...arguably having some value as a stolen vehicle alert system....which could send a signal to the driver's cel phone. Of course, then we'd be talking about someone who remembered their cel phone but forgot their child in the car. Sheesh.

Good thinking. I was just grieving over one more precious baby left to die alone in an oven, thinking COME ON! WE CAN SOLVE THIS PROBLEM PEOPLE. I for one am sick about how many children die every summer from stupid, inept, stressed out, drugged out, OR WHATEVER, parents.

There might actually be something to this. It is a tragic situation. It seems to be easy for us to be judgmental on these things, but since it seems to happen with some regularity to people who are otherwise "normal, good parents", there is clearly a need for solutions. Thank you for thinking in terms of solutions.

"send a text message to the parent."

and the message begins - "Hey dipsh*t,..."

Not a bad idea though - the seats could have plugs that could plug in to the car's electrical chasis, just like the newer clips they now have installed in the crevice of the cars backseats.

I've had it the other way around were after I handed off the younger one to my wife, or another family member - I'd be a few miles down the road and get that striking fear that he was forgotten even though everything was completely in order. I just figured that was the undercurrent of my consciousness working correctly.

We were talking about your idea on another thread. I wish they would do something about this.

You could also set up other kinds of systems, but you would have to ensure they could not be foiled, like the key won't turn in the ignition without doing something inconvenient, like maybe checking the car seat and pressing a keypad?

On the other thread, there is a device that can be installed in police cars for their dogs which overheat faster than humans because of the way they breathe.

I can't get the link to code for some reason, have done it at least 100 times.

In this particular instance, the day care could have called to ask if she was bringing in her child, assuming this was procedure -- as with schools. Maybe 99 times out of 100 the mother informs them the child is sick or some other reason, but that 1 in a 100....

decent idea, but better is a temperature alert instead of a proximity device because it would be a lot cheaper and more reliable.

It would have to be standard with the car - if not, the only people who would have them would be the hyper-vigilent, who'd not likely leave the kid in the car in the first place. But, still a damn good idea.

I'm not going to be able to read through all these posts, but I wonder if it wouldn't be enough to just put a mother's purse or diaper bag in the back seat...then when she went to get it, she'd see the baby.

Or when the car is turned off, if the baby seat is occupied, it will beep immediately. Lots of possibilities for interfacing baby seat sensors and the vehicle for the purpose of alerting the adults.

And the first time it fails look for the idiot parent to sue for millions. Sorry, how about a little personal responsibility.

If somebody can't remember to take care of their own offspring, how do they possibly remember to turn off the iron, or turn off the oven?

Puh-leeze.

All good ideas, but nothing will replace a loving, caring, vigilant mother who puts her child first, before anything else in the world, including work.

Thanks for posting those interesting ideas on child seat sensors. Unfortunately, to protect children against their absent-minded parents, it may be necessary to make these sensors mandatory.

A two piece proximity alarm system is the best choice as it is independent of the vehicle system one on the child or what ever and one on you.

Just look up

Mobile Proximity Alarm.

It is lightweight (both the transmitter and the receiver together weigh about the same as four quarters) and compact making it the perfect device to protect you from theft or forgetfulness and to alert you when little ones wander off. Simply put the transmitter on the person or item to be protected and if it goes out of a 15 to 25 foot range of the receiver an alert sounds...

It is time we get back to the old ways. When a tragedy like this occurs if this women is not a druggie, a crimminal. If there is nothing in her life to suggest this was deliberate act. Then we should greatfully say.

"There but by the Grace of God Go I".

If only the Grand Juries were independent enough to tell the prosecutor to take a long walk down a short pier in cases like this.

What could anyone do to make you feel worse or "teach you" anything or "Be an Example to others" if either by your error or ommission your child dies? Nothing...

How this women will ever get out of bed again is beyond me.

W
