Schwarzenegger courts gay Republicans
CBC NEWS ^ | Fri, 30 Jun 2006

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is reaching out to the state's gay community, nine months after vetoing a bill to allow same-sex marriage in the state.

Schwarzenegger got a resounding reception at a fundraising dinner for the Log Cabin Republicans, an activist organization for gay conservatives.

The group supports same-sex marriage and opposed Schwarzenegger's veto of the bill last year.

There was no direct mention of the issue at the fundraiser although Schwarzenegger did tell the audience that no one should be judged by their sexual orientation.

"I can't promise you that we will always be [of] the same mind," Schwarzenegger said, "but I can promise you that I will always have an open mind."

His words prompted loud applause and chants of "four more years." The former body builder and Hollywood actor is running for re-election this year.

Despite his same-sex marriage veto, Republican activists point out that Schwarzenegger has signed bills that expand the benefits rights of gay partners and toughen hate-crimes penalties.

Earlier this month, gay activists in San Francisco awarded the governor their "pink brick" award, handed out annually to someone who has set back gay causes over the past year.

Where did this post come from? The Governor has said he WOULD VETO Senate Bill 1437, a bill to introduce kindergarteners, first and second graders in the public schools to the glories of the homosexual lifestyle. None the less, even if not a Californian, all who oppose this loathsome legislation are urged to support Gov. S. in VETOING this bill by phoning your opinion to 916-445-2841.

I was going to say it's too late...the last ones have already left. Then, I remembered we have some FReepers still there and I didn't want to offend them.

(I was born in CA. Lived the first 51 years of my life there.)

"Schwarzenegger courts gay Republicans"

"Courting" and "gay" put together. Somehow, that title just doesn't sound right.

Some open minds should be closed for repairs.

"an activist organization for gay conservatives"

it is my understanding that Log Cabin is not "for gay conservatives". It is for Republicans who oppose at least one non-conservative position.... that of a special place for the traditional family:

"Conservative" in this sense means "conserve what history has taught us, that the traditional family is a necessary part of societal control. And that without the societal control by the traditional family government would need to get bigger to handle the additional societal control needed.

"Conservative" means a belief that men and women are different. Men have testosterone and inclined toward aggression, which is good to a point. Women have estrogen and inclined toward cooperation, which is good to a point.

Log Cabin would support societal "families" based on two people with testosterone. History has shown that this leads to a higher degree of domestic violence and aggressive behavior unrestrained by the unique qualities of women. History has shown that testosterone based societal "families" require more big government, which is not "conservative".

Log Cabin thus is not "for gay conservatives". It is for "confused conservatives"... but mostly it is for moderate and liberal Republicans and the libertine faction of libertarians who don't have a complete libertarian ideology but try to cherry pick one part of it.

Thanks for supplying the number.

I just called (a few times) ~ be sure to select #2 (OPPOSE this bill) ~ the wording is confusing and I accidentally punched #1 the first time.

I hope others don't make my mistake.

Well, in view of Gov Wimponator's recent actions in bending over and telling the Calif Dems how good it was for him, this news comes as no surprise.

Sigh, there are still LOTS of decent people in California.
Unfortuntately, we are slightly outnumbered by the insane and the foolish.

I suggest a mass movement of conservatives into, rather then out of, our state.

It's also an organization that opposes a large part of the California Republican Party Platform
We recognize that the two-parent family provides the best environment of stability, discipline, charity and responsibility. We commend and support those single parents who struggle to maintain stable homes for their families. We resist the efforts of the liberals in the Democrat Party to redefine the traditional family. We offer the Republican Party as an option to all who are concerned about the deterioration of the American family.

Recognizing the traditional model of monogamous heterosexual marriage as the only stable relationship upon which to build a society, we believe that homosexuality should not be presented as an acceptable "alternative" lifestyle in public education and policy. We oppose granting to homosexuals special privileges, including marriage, domestic partnership benefits, and child custody or adoption.

Thank YOU, dl, for the additional info. I hope everyone will call 1-914-445-2841 and encourage the Governor to VETO SB 1437. Press one for English (!) and press two for "against the bill". Thanks, EVERYONE. God bless!

>>Are there gay republicans??????

yes there are. I know in Mass., Acting Gov. Jane Swift--
who was a PR disaster--chose openly gay Patrick Guerrero
to be her running mate. But since her poll numbers were down to about 13 per cent positive, she abandoned her candidacy (and in stepped Mitt Romney). I think Guerrero's actually pres. of the Log Cabin Republicans
