Va. Candidate Webb: GOP Can't Fix Iraq Jul 01 10:48 AM US/Eastern

By BOB LEWIS Associated Press Writer

RICHMOND, Va.

Neither President Bush nor the Republican-led Congress can extract the United States from a bloody quagmire of their own making in Iraq, said a former Republican who is seeking a Senate seat in Virginia.

Democrat Jim Webb, who was President Reagan's Navy secretary in 1987- 88, said he knows from his own past as one of the Vietnam War's most decorated Marines how to "bring the Iraq War to an early and honorable end."

Webb bolted the GOP in 2003 over Bush's decision to invade Iraq and this year announced he would challenge Republican Sen. George Allen, a conservative former governor who's exploring a 2008 White House bid. Opposition to the war is a cornerstone of Webb's campaign.

"I have believed strongly that when things aren't working well, it is the responsibility of our leaders to admit it, and to fix the problem," Webb said Saturday in the Democrats' weekly radio address. "Some say that speaking out against a war is disloyal to the troops. Whoever says that should consider what it's like to be a troop, wishing someone would speak the truth."

Webb said the Republicans are no more able today to wrap up the military entanglement in Iraq than the Democrats and President Truman could disengage U.S. forces from Korea in 1952. It took a change of parties and the election of war hero Dwight Eisenhower to bring the troops home then, he said, and the same is true now.

"I'm reminded of another time, with a leader who truly understood war," Webb said. "He claimed that 'the old administration cannot be expected to repair what it failed to prevent.'"

How honorable is it to leave Iraq to chaos, anarchy and terrorism?

Yes we can look forward to one certain thing by electing Webb and his new Democrat friends and that is certain failure.

Amazing how a guy who hypes his "Reagan Administration" background has so much more in common with Cindy banSheehan Al Murtha and Mike Moore then former President Reagan.

What an idiot. He may be military but he doesn't know much about politics or history.

I guess he thinks the troops are no longer in Korea.

Democrat Jim Webb.."

The "Q" word again.
Sigh.
Hey, when did John Murtha change his name to Jim Webb?
Or did they just figure out how to do human cloning?

Yes, Eisenhower understood war, in this statement it was obvious he didn't fully understand his enemy. The Communists (Russia, China, NK) were operating in concert and Kim Il Sung's minders weren't as concerned with liberating the South as they were inflicting casualties on American forces.

Webb shows here what an idiot he is. NK to this day remains one of the most destabilizing influence in the world. Their pursuit of the atomic bomb, development and trade in ballistic missiles, illicit drugs and counterfeiting all make them a threat. A threat which could have been dealt with in 1952.

He makes the comparison to North Korea, and I think WOW, we better not leave early.

"GOP can't fix Iraq".
But of course HE can. Sure he can. Right. Yep. Never doubt it for a minute. Slam dunk. On to the next problem.

Yeah we saw how well that worked. We ran aways as fast as we could from Afghanistan after the Sovs left because it was a REAL "bloody quagmire" and into the void stooped Bin Laden and Al Qeda. When are these Neo-Isolationist losers like Webb going to wake up to the fact you do NOT defeat mass murdering terrorists by hiding from them? You defeat them by kill them.

Another example of the Democrat's emerging game plan for the 2006 Campaign "Go Back to the 1960s with us!".

It is obvious in this statement that Webb is willing to say anything to get elected, or he was willing to say anything to get into the Reagan administration.

James Webb is a superb novelist. His "Fields Of Fire" should be required reading. That said, his Politics are for s**t!

"Cut & Run-Lite" ain't gonna cut it in Virginia.

Jack.

Hmm, I think I've heard that before. Now where was that? Oh yeah. "Peace with honor". We all know how well that worked out.

Great - running away and allowing millions to die and a country of descend into chaos is now an "honorable end".

Hi, Bigg Red:

I'm a native Marylander. Have many friends who live in Northern Virginia, Quantico and Norfolk. Warned all of them not to vote for Tim Kaine.

A few did vote for Timmy, and now I play "Your Governor Is Stupider Than My Governor" with them whenever we get together.

It's a fun game, and all are more than a bit embarrassed by Timmy's overall ineffectiveness since taking office.

Jack.

About as honorable as the Congress refusing to resupply the South Vietnamese during Hanoi's final offensive.
