Yanukovich Triples Demand

Regions Party of Viktor Yanukovich delivered yesterday another ultimatum to the Orange Coalition, increasing the demands three fold. The Orange rebuffed and pledged not to compromise. The raging clashes may prevent submitting the PM candidature to Supreme Rada today. Yesterday’s round table of the opposition and the Orange was expected to end the long-drawn crisis. “We will find the way to unblock parliament in the nearest an hour and a half,” Roman Zavarych, one of the main negotiators of pro-president’s Our Ukraine was very optimistic before the talks. But his hopes didn’t materialize.

The key oppositionist, Viktor Yanukovich, didn’t show up before the Orange Coalition of Our Ukraine, Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko and Social Party at that round table, making abortive another attempt to reconcile.

Yanukovich mates said he didn’t attend the round table as Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko ignored it.

According to the sources, Yanukovich initially intended to go to negotiations, but thought better once he saw the draft resolution shaped by the Orange. The document set forth no requirements of the Regions Party, but spelled out a ban on ultimatums. The Orange promised not to refer to the packet voting to elect PM and Supreme Rada’s speaker, expecting the Regions Party to unblock the parliament in return.

As a result, Yanukovich preferred to miss negotiations, tripling the ultimatum instead. In addition to the previous requirement to provide key offices in Supreme Rada’s committees, the Regions Party wants the office of the first vice speaker and a number of executive offices. Under the ultimatum that specifies 12 requirements overall, the Constitutional Court is to be elected of judges put forward by the Regions Party. Otherwise, the opposition won’t unblock the parliament and won’t negotiate. Moreover, Yanukovich said he is ready for early elections to Supreme Rada, signaling his final purpose could be the dissolution of parliament and new elections to it.

The response of the Orange trio was tough. The Coalition won’t yield, Dmitry Vydrin from Bloc of Yulia Timoshenko made clear yesterday.
