Son arrested in beating of former KKK leader

The son of a former Ku Klux Klan leader was arrested Tuesday on charges that he beat and critically injured his father during a fight Saturday.

Indiana State Police say they arrested Anthony D. Berry, 31, at his home in Garrett in DeKalb County. He was being held in the DeKalb County Jail without bail Tuesday on a felony charge of aggravated battery, said Indiana State Police Detective Mark Heffelfinger.

Berry's father, former KKK leader Jeffrey Lynn Berry, 53, was in critical condition Tuesday at a Fort Wayne hospital, Heffelfinger said. A probable cause affidavit said that the elder Berry was had swelling on his brain stem and required a respirator to keep him breathing. If he survives, the affidavit said, he will most likely re-quire nursing home care.

Police are still investigating the motive for the attack, Heffelfinger said.

Jeffrey Lynn Berry formerly led the DeKalb County-based American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. In 2001, he pleaded guilty to a felony charge of conspiracy to commit criminal confinement with a deadly weapon for conspiring to hold a TV news crew hostage in his DeKalb County home in 1999.

Reporter George Sells IV and camerawoman Heidi Thiel of Louisville, Ky., TV station WHAS interviewed Berry in November 1999, but said he became angry when he learned the story also would include comments from a former Klan member.

Berry refused to let them leave until they surrendered the video of the interview with him, they said. Another man, who carried a shotgun, locked the door.

He was sentenced in 2001 to seven years in prison and was released in December 2004, according to the In-diana Department of Correction.

Maybe he caught his dad winking at a black woman, and he went off. Just a bunch of upstanding people.

I can't picture this. I mean, how could THIS family be dysfunctional?

Nice family values.

Our "justice" system should keep people like Papa Berry permanently locked up. I'll reserve judgement on the son, since he may well have suffered all sorts of abuse at the hands of his violent, unstable father, and may even have been acting in self-defense at the time he did this.

Perhaps junior could run for the senate as a Democrat.

Maybe the apple did fall far from the rotted tree.

Good for junior, I hope a jury doesn't convict for this well deserved beating.

Seriously.  Why the hell do we even bother sentencing people anymore?  I honestly can't remember the last time I read an article where the perp finished his sentence.

Why don't judges just say "Go to jail for a couple years.  We'll let you out on a whim."

I think I've reached the point where "Early Release" should be exclusively at the discretion of the State's Governor, like reprieves and clemency, so when these early-release f*ckheads go out and commit another crime, everybody in the State knows who to tar and feather in the press.

I was worried there for a minute that Robert Byrd had gotten into a family squabble.
