We're hurting the poor whales

I'm sick of the Annual Baby Whale Hunt, in which little baby whales are clubbed to death for their pure white coats.

You obviously have never worn a nifty new whale coat.

They look swell at the office.

His opus didn't sound very hateful. Everybody here finds a lot of people with whom they vehemently disagree. Sometimes people just decide they don't want to spend the time dealing with it any more. I recall that Long Cut acquired a new little son during his FR years (referred to as "Mini Cut" in a couple of posts), and he probably wanted to spend more of his limited spare time with Mini Cut and less in rehashing old debates on FR.

No, but his subsequent participation on an antifreeper site was.

Back when I was fat, people thought I did.

Glad to see we have somebody here with some first hand experience, who thinks it's worth considering the whales in the equation. I have a strong suspicion that if the Navy were told "Absolutely no active sonar, ever", they'd soon find something else that was less destructive and perhaps worked even better. In this age of incredibly advanced technology, it's hard to believe they can't come up with something better, and more sophisticated, than blasting the eardrums out of whales.

Hmmm. Odd. Active anti-freepers usually leave angry, hateful opuses (or is that "opi"), unless the terms of their departure are such that they aren't given a chance to leave any opus at all. Which site was he subsequently active on?

I figured, from what I said, that you would realise there is no evidence, and there will not be any, as it is impossible without actually subjecting whales to testing. Which will not be done.

There is plenty of info available about low-frequenct sonar testing and the results, on the internet. You can look it up at your leasure. Try LFA/Heard Island testing. A lot of it is classified though, and you will not find anything about the diver, as that was hushed up quickly. You can believe me or not, I don't care.

As I said, I was there, I saw the report on what happened to the diver. It doesn't take a genius to wonder why there were no mammals spotted in the eastern med during the testing, or what an acoustic level of that magnitude could do to soft membranes. I'm sure, if you talk to a sonar tech, he will tell you what probably would happen if you were in the water when someone went active. The navy tests were not even done at full level, but you will find only opposing data, depending on which info you look at, and what you have already decided to believe.

Your search - LFA/Heard Island testing - did not match any documents.

As sound is there way of communicating and basically staying alive, it stands to reason that it wouldn't take too much of an overload, to do damage. Acoustic energy is a fantastic way of accomplishing tasks in an ocean environment, and I can't think of sonar ever going away. I have spent almost all my adult life working around the sea and with the navy.

Sorry. Did you try just LFA, or low-frequenct sonar testing, or some variables? You have to be a little flexible when searching.

I expect this very destructive type of sonar will go away. In addition to the danger to marine life and humans, I would think that a serious disadvantage to this is that, while we would get information about where enemy subs are, they would always know when we had that information. Since it's obviously not possible to use this as a constant surveillance system in all the relevant oceans, enemy subs would know immediately when they need to be on special alert. A system that doesn't loudly advertise itself would seem to me to be inherently superior, and is hopefully something that is already being worked towards.

Several. I won't mention them by name. He actually created an antifreeper site.

They are both. They're so stupid and so screwed up....that they don't get it and they never WILL.

For the love of God, are these people just stupid or so screwed up that they don't get it?

1) Other whales.
2) It's own sonar navigating system, which is how it figures out not to swim onto a beach.

I guess I'll search later tonight, but I'm not sure why I'm searching for evidence to back up assertions I'm skeptical of.

It's practically the only thing that can detect diesel boats running on batteries, besides, the active platform doesn't have to be close. It pings, a sub in the suspected vicinity of the bad guy picks the echo up, and does it's thing.
