GERMANY READY TO SIGN ISRAELI SUB DEAL

LONDON [MENL] -- Germany has been preparing to formally approve the sale of advanced submarines to Israel.

The German daily Die Welt said on July 1 that the Berlin government would approve the sale of two Dolphin-class diesel submarines to Israel in July. The newspaper said Israel and Germany would sign an agreement over the next few weeks.

The agreement was said to have resolved a long dispute between Israel and Germany over the price of the submarines. Die Welt said Israel would purchase the two Dolphins, manufactured by Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft, for $1.27 billion. Israel already has three Dolphin-class submarines.

Berlin was also ready to sell armored personnel carriers to Israel. Die Welt said the government has approved the export of the Dingo-2 wheeled all-protected vehicle to Israel for trials. NOTE: The above is not the full item.

Israel has received over $100 billion in military and economic assistance from the US. Since 1985, this assistance has been in the form of grants, not loans. U.S. Assistance to Israel (FY1949 - FY2006)

Israel, unlike other recipients of military assistance from the US, can spend 25% of the grant on the development of its own defense industry. All money is fungible, which means that Israel can use other funds to purchase subs from Germany rather than from the US, its major benefactor. Why is Israel buying the subs from Germany?

FYI: 42.4 of Israel's exports go to the US and 22% of its imports come from the US. Diamonds are Israel's biggest export and import commodity.

Why is Israel buying the subs from Germany?

1. Because the US produce only nuclear subs in the meantime. This technology will be not exported (Israel is no exception here).

2. The Dolphins that are already deliverd are by large parts a gift from Germany.

3. German D/E-subs are simply the best that can be bought on this planet. In combination with a AIP-system they are much more silent than any nuclear sub and nearly undedectable.

Germany tries to be helpful in that case. The former chancellor Helmut Kohl wanted to support Israel after Saddams attacks with Scud missles. The possibility that Jews are dying through gas again after the Holocaust was intolerable (BTW - Sarin, the WMD of Saddam Hussein, is a German invention of WWII). This is one of the reasons why we Germans feel a special responsibility to help Israel against such threats. To give Israel a nuclear second strike capability, large parts of the subs were paid by the German gouvernment. It was clear from the very beginning that the boats are used as a carrier for cruise missles. The torpedo tubes of the boats are wider than usual so that they are suitable for "Popeye-cruise-missles" with a nuclear warhead.

Time for me to go look at a map, and see where Israel really is. I didn't realize they had a navy. Don't laugh at me.

I had the same thought. I think it's time we both went to lunch.

"Vienna, July 28, 1914
The Royal Serbian Government not having answered in a satisfactory manner the note of July 23, 1914, presented by the Austro-Hungarian Minister at Belgrade, the Imperial and Royal Government are themselves compelled to see to the safeguarding of their rights and interests, and, with this object, to have recourse to force of arms. Austria-Hungary consequently considers herself henceforward in state of war with Serbia.
COUNT BERCHTOLD"

It was Austria that started it.

But how come the one they're selling to Israel has a drain plug in the bottom?

Best non-nuclear subs, I agree.

And, the best tanks in WWII.

Sorry, that was the T-35/85.

The Germans did make the best ballistic missiles of WWII though.

"The Germans did make the best ballistic missiles of WWII though."

They also had the snappiest uniforms.

Bit of a leather-queer thing going, but that's to be expected in any totalitarian state.

You're right, the T-34 roasted every tank Germany had.

At least the japs could hit us with those balloon bombs over here. They killed 6 American civilians.

Our aircraft, spacecraft, missiles, large ships and nuke subs are second to none. Lotsa other stuff (such as ordnance) too. We have no competition overall, although there are some limited areas where others are as good or better.

Aren't M1-A tanks outfitted with a German designed main gun? But overall, I agree with you 100%. The Leopard is a great tank, but could it beat an Abrams? I don't know, but I'll bet it would be a close fight.

The US has little to offer to Taiwan without assistance from either Europe or Japan. The US last exported D/Es in the late 70s if im not mistaken.

Yep. Our last two, USS Trout & Wahoo, were scheduled to go to Iran. After the Shah was deposed in '79, the Trout went to Key West and Wahoo to Honolulu as targets for ASW training.

Oh Brother....

In Reality the German uniforms were designed to be intimidating. This has nothing to do with "leather fetishes" which came later but do tap into the same psyhchology of intimidation.

Ever wonder why State Troopers wear knee-high boots and bandoliers yet drive Fords. Same reason. It's intimidating.

The Japanese make good subs. They could build some for Taiwan. Of course, a lot of Japanese factories in China would be torched.

M1 Vs Leo2!!!Well that is something that has been discussed on numerous internet forums for ages now.The usual perception tilts in favour of the Leo,supported by fact that it has won far more export orders than the Abrams & has beaten the Abrams to a few of those incl. the Hellenic army's.Besides the Abrams, the Brit Challenger-2,Israeli Merkava & Indian Arjun all have bits of Leo-2 tech.
