European Backlash Over U.S. Efforts To Track Terrorist Finances
Fox News ^ | July 07, 2006 | Brit Hume

By a vote of 302 to 219, the European Parliament approved a resolution demanding that European banks and governments disclose what they knew about the U.S. program to monitor terrorists' financial transactions.

The New York Times reports one French politician accused the U.S. of "rifling through our private bank accounts," and an Italian lawmaker compared the case to alleged CIA kidnappings of terror suspects, saying it has the same objective, "to extort information."

The administration had tried to convince the Times not to unveil the secret program, arguing among other things, that it would hurt cooperation with the Europeans.

But Times executive editor Bill Keller dismissed those concerns, calling that argument "puzzling," and noting just after publication, that the story did not appear to be generating a "backlash against the program" — at least, until now.

Those goddamned treasonous bastards! Chances are pretty good that the foreign governments knew about the program and understood its importance to the security of us all. However, now that it is exposed to their sheeple, they must take the outraged position that we're now seeing.

Between this report tonight...and the news that Lebanon helped us with the terror case we heard about today...which puts THEM in danger..

I don't think we can tiptoe around the problem.

The NYTimes and the other rags that are leaking..AND the leakers need to be punished, harshly...

Otherwise more will leak, knowing they can get away with it...and NO COUNTRIES will help anymore, knowing that their involvement will get leaked..and seemingly, the USA doesn't care!

I see, so Europe doesn't approve of using military means to fight back against terrorists, but apparently they don't approve of non-military means either. What Dhimmis!

Stephen, if terrorists ever were stupid enough to hit the NY Times building, I for one would have a very difficult time restraining my schadenfreude meter. A very, very difficult time.

We have an AG that doesn't care about immigration, going after those who commit treason and is incapable of speaking persuasively. That political hispanic appointee was huge mistake for George W. Bush.

Time to tell most of Europe to pi$$ and the rest to make a choice. We should turn our back on them and concentrate on building relations on the Pacific Rim.

Don't expect the Islamists to do our job for us.

They won't kill the useful idiots.

Not at least until AFTER they've won.
