A Massachusetts man whose family traveled all the way to India to check out a possible bride for his son is suing the womans relatives because she was too ugly and unpolished for his baby boy.
In his lawsuit, Dr. Vijai Pandey of Belchertown claims his wife, son and daughter were shocked to discover the Indian woman was ugly with dark complexion and protruded bad teeth and couldnt speak English to carry on conversation.
Pandey then called off the arranged marriage, according to the lawsuit posted on the Web site thesmokinggun.com
I felt cheated, really, and there was no remorse from the other side, like it was our mistake, Pandey told the Herald yesterday. I felt taken advantage of.
The Pandey family were good friends with a couple from Maryland, Lallan and Kanti Giri, who suggested that Pandeys 37-year-old son, Pranjul Kumar Pandey, propose to their niece, Savita Giri, according to the lawsuit. Savita Giri lives in India.
The Giris said it would be a great family favor because Savitas father had died and her family was struggling, the lawsuit said.
Pandey pointed out that his youngest son was extremely handsome had a fair complexion and spoke English. Pandey said in the lawsuit that he was assurred compensation if Savita wasnt beautiful and suitable, the lawsuit claims.
Pandey made numerous calls to the womans mother and sent her money for Savitas passport and other expenses, the suit claims.
In the lawsuit, Pandey claims the Giris sent him a picture of Savita but he couldnt tell much about Savitas complexion and beauty from it.
Pandey said the Giris reassured that Savita was beautiful and suitable and they take full responsibility.

According to Jowe Biden, the family has placed a downpayment on a 7-11 franchise in Dover, anticipating a win in court.
Ironic, but Belcher is from the Old French and means, "handsome-faced."
I don't know their customs, but a 37 year old man having his daddy find a bride for him? Ladies, beware!
Probably was a real control freak too.
She might be ugly, but she sure can hunt!
Buying a pig in a poke (for you younger FReepers, that means sight unseen) is never a good idea. No exchange of photos, or phone conversations? Arranged marriages are a cultural norm for some folks, and that's their business. But no family member having seen or spoken to the proposed spouse is just plain dumb.
What!!!???? Nearly thirty posts and no Helen Thomas pic? C'mon guys!!!
Well...there goes my day...
;)
Complexion says a lot about India's rigid caste system. Indians come in many different skin tones, from nearly white (look at some of the Bollywood actors and actresses) to very dark. And the complexion of a mate is very important in arranged marriages.
I'll bet those dawgs even bark with a southern accent...
