REDWOOD CITY An 18-year-old Redwood City woman expressed sorrow and remorse after the car accident that killed a royal Tongan couple and their driver, the lawyer representing her on charges of vehicular homicide said Friday.
Looking scared as she stood behind a glass partition in a San Mateo County courtroom on Friday, Edith Delgado pleaded not guilty.
Superior Court Judge Thomas McGinn Smith upped Delgado's bail from $300,000 to $3 million on Friday. He also set a preliminary hearing for July 20.
Delgado faces up to eight years in prison if convicted, something that her lawyer, Randy Moore of San Jose, said would be a "second tragedy."
California Highway Patrol officers say Delgado was speeding on Highway 101 in Menlo Park about 9 p.m. Wednesday when her 1998 white Ford Mustang hit the driver's side of an SUV carrying Prince Tu'ipelehake, 55, his wife, Princess Kaimana Tu'ipelehake, 46, and their driver, Vinisia Hefa, 36, of East Palo Alto. All three were killed.

Was alcohol involved and is ms delgado legal?
No alcohol but she was reportedly drag racing.
Oh, yeah. An illegal named Edith.
Article says no alcohol involved and it looks as if she's legal. Regardless of those things, she still did something very stupid and now she's going to be made an example. She seems remorseful enough, but being sorry doesn't make you innocent.
Were the Tongans wearing seat belts?
3 people dead and she can only get 8 years which means she will be out in what 4? thats a second tragedy mister lawyer guy
Just got her liciense in February I think.
Max sentence of only eight years?
Sheesh, there are so many laws, several of them unconstitutional, that will net a person nearly that much of more, for things that harm no one.........!
Why the up in bail? If it is because of who the victims were?...it just doesn't seem right to me....if joe schmoe was killed by this woman...would the bail be 3 million dollars?
An act of stupidity without intent to hurt anyone should not get anyone 8 years. Was she stupid?.... YES! Go to prison for 6 years......... NO!!!
fry her.
She did it Tonga ina Cheek.
Forgot your sarcasm tag I see.
she wasn't just "speeding" - she was racing on a public road. there is far greater intent in that act, then simply driving 70 in a 55 in the left lane.
Actually the rescuers had hoped the royal couple in back had survived the crash, but the roof apparently collapsed and they suffered massive head trauma.
I thought new beefy SUVs would have better roof reinforcement.
OK, not that I think this should be a capital offense, fair enough.
But the facts known in this case so far, makes it far worse then a simple traffic accident. max jail time for sure.
