The White House belittled former President Bill Clinton's policy of direct engagement with North Korea on Monday, saying efforts to shower North Korean leader Kim Jong Il "with flowers and chocolates" had failed.
White House spokesman Tony Snow told reporters that officials in Clinton's Democratic administration went to Pyongyang with offers of light-water nuclear reactors, "a basketball signed by Michael Jordan and many other inducements for the dear leader to try to agree not to develop nuclear weapons _ and it failed."
"We've learned from that mistake."
Officials in President George W. Bush's administration have repeatedly rejected the suggestion that formal discussions might be undertaken with Pyongyang outside of six-nation talks meant to rid the North of its nuclear weapons program. Bush officials insist on speaking with the North at a negotiating forum that includes the Koreas, the United States, Japan, China and Russia. Those talks have been stalled since November.

Bump, and go Tony! Rub their noses in it. Anyone paying attention has know this for years.
Tony Snow ping list ping.
bump
Every sane person has rejected the klinton krony idea of bombing the launch pads and the other half suggesting we kiss kimjongILL's tummy.
Its about time someone pointed out when the trouble started.
Perhaps Mr. Bush has learned rom another mistake , That of keeping quiet when the blame belongs on another's shoulders.
That strategy was a huge success with Monica, however.
LOL!
Perfect! Nicely done.
Hooray for Tony and , finally, the brave WH. I hope W was behind this analysis. It is about time that the Bushies finally realized how disastrous the Clintonistas were in destroying American foreign policy. Mdm. Albright was a dunce and should be cited as one over and over and over again. And Bubba should not be missed in creating an appeasement atmosphere with the Koreans, Chi-Coms, and the Islamofascists.
Roger Clinton rehearses for his performance in North Korea December 5, 1999
I'm shocked!
That's the most critical the Bush Admin has been of Clinton during the past 5 years.
That's not very brotherly.
Your #5 graphic is perfect!!
I'm so glad Tony Snow is finally responding to Albright, Berger, and Richardson. They've been all over the place trying to blame Bush for Clinton failures.
The Bushies are showing some promise in that regard after being trashed for several days on the North Korea issue by the Clintonista crowd. Next they need to nail the seditious and traitorous NY Times ...
Ahh yes.
I remember that.
From staff and wire reports
PYONGYANG, North Korea (CNN) -- The half-brother of U.S. President Bill Clinton is in North Korea to give a musical performance Sunday in the isolated communist nation that for decades has shielded its citizens from U.S. influences.
Roger Clinton, a singer and bandleader, will perform with two dozen South Korean pop stars in a 2,000-seat auditorium in the North Korean capital of Pyongyang, North Korea's official news agency said.
The Korean Central News Agency said Roger Clinton attended a performance by North Korea's state-run symphony orchestra. KCNA identified the younger Clinton as a U.S. pop singer, without mentioning his relationship with the president.
Among the pieces performed were "Korea is One" and "Bumper Harvest has Visited Chongsan Field," KCNA said.
For decades, North Korea has severely restricted contact with South Korea and the United States. In recent years, the North has begun opening up, in part because of its need for aid to feed its hunger-stricken population.
Invitation seen as gesture to U.S.
That North Korea invited Roger Clinton to give an unprecedented rhythm and blues performance has been seen as a friendly gesture toward the United States.
Meanwhile, in another potential sign of warming international relations, North Korea's ruling Worker's Party Secretary Kim Yong Sun and former Japanese Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama urged their governments to normalize diplomatic relations, which have been stalled since 1992
