You're getting ready to drive through there? Yikes! Did this close down the whole thing or just part of it?

IOW, do you have to go through other BigDig tunnels? Please don't!

Concrete seems to be the common denominator. Or cement. Or engineering.

In a society that can't even produce crackless sidewalks, I wonder at the wisdom of crafting larger works out of concrete.

"In May, prosecutors charged six current and former employees of a concrete supplier with fraud for allegedly concealing that some concrete delivered to the Big Dig was not freshly mixed. State and federal officials said that long-term maintenance, not immediate safety, was the likely impact."

I don't know if this is related to the concrete frauds or other forms of shoddy construction, but it sure does sound like they have an "immediate safety" issue NOW!!! Incredible, here in the great USofA, we have governments run by Kennedy-Kerry type shysters who are no better than the old USSR........

The same whiny lib Demagogues and RINOs who wail about Katrina and levees, Iraq reconstruction, etc. should now be forced to explain how $14 BILLION from the federal teat (i.e., US.....) has been so horribly misspent by the charlatan Demagogues and RINOs in the land of the Mass-hole.

Back before one shovel full of dirt had been turned there were proposals to build a Boston bypass out in the bay.

Yep... and I meant to mention in my prior post, when a third harbor tunnel was decided on, the original plan was 12 lanes, plus a bridge... Dems and environmentalists froke.

"That will encourage people to drive cars!" so ultimately the whole thing was downsized to the size of the roads it was replacing, making the net change in capacity about a factor of 1.1 to 1 not 3 or 4 to one like the original proposals.

The scumbag enviros... the grifting politicians... both parties... to Hell with them.

Perfect storm

Your key point (poster Sam Adams also made) is that I-95 traffic flow through Boston hasn't been helped. This was admitted during the "Big Dig" years and that it was mostly a beatification project (job making machine too) to depress the eyesore Central Artery stretch of I05 that ran right through Boston.

Like I said, this vanity project would never have been built without OPM. In this case Federal dollars extracted from the American taxpayers

Why should the ceilings even be constructed of anything as heavy

For the same reason all the walls are covered in 8" or so tiles.........the cost. The higher the cost the greater the profit to the construction managers

I'm scratching my head about using "concrete that was not freshly mixed" - I mean, wouldn't that be kinda stuck to the insides of the mixer?

The company supplying concrete was indicted in May for using 'old' concrete. (Not reliable. Plus they billed Big Dig for 'new concrete' and made many more millions -- fraud.) But until they find out why the panels gave way, they won't be able to blame this on the concrete supplier -- because in this part of the tunnel, 40 foot tile concrete ceiling panels are held up by steel 'tie backs' and epoxy. There was a popping sound and then the thirty ton tiles fell.

Concrete and corruption are the common denominators. It seems that the very thought of pouring concrete magnetically attracts corrupt politicians. Another "C" too that I won't mention

You must mean beautification. Beatification means the declaring of the departed to be saints, which is something the Pope does.

Just rename one tunnel the "Teddy the Swimmer Memorial ****hole" and another one the "John Vichy Kerry Memorial Pile of Rubble"....... oh, and keep humans out of there unless and until they can figure out how to salvage this $14 billion monstrosity. Everyone involved should be deported to Belarus, to join their fellow political mobsters.......

Dunno, I think maybe rubber cement would've had a cushioning effect on the vibrations and given those suckers some sway instead of fracture. Fung sway, of course.
