As a local NAACP branch called for a federal investigation into racial profiling allegations against him, St. Tammany Parish Sheriff Jack Strain remained defiant Monday, saying critics have distorted his words in an act of "shameful political grandstanding."
The Covington branch of the NAACP said Strain's statement after a recent quadruple murder that he intends to target people with two distinctive hairstyles commonly worn by African-Americans is unconstitutional.
"His announced intention to stop anyone with dreadlocks or a 'chee wee' hairstyle is a clear-cut case of racial profiling that violates residents' civil rights," branch President Annie Spell said.
The NAACP has sent letters to U.S. Attorney Jim Letten and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales asking them to investigate the allegations, said Spell, who called on Strain to retract his statements.
Strain said the NAACP and American Civil Liberties Union, which criticized his remarks last week, are trying to manufacture a controversy by ignoring that his statements were made in the context of a murder investigation.
"I didn't just wake up one day and say, 'I want to arrest a bunch of black people,' " he said. "I'm investigating the horrific murder of four people, but it's become apparent that individuals making these allegations don't want to be confused with the facts."

Stand firm Sheriff, the victims deserve justice.
"The dispute stems from a TV interview Strain gave after two adults and two teenagers were shot to death June 27, allegedly in a botched drug deal in which the two suspects were identified as young black men, one with dreadlocks and one with a "chee wee" hairstyle."
So, I gather that if the description was of a 7' black man, the sheriff couldn't stop 7' black men? I don't get this.
Agreed. If more people would start standing up to them then the NAACP can be shown for the thugs they are.
"Amazing how the NAACP is much more focused on potential civil liberty violations than actual murder victims."
Oh, if only that were the case. They could care less about civil liberty violations. If a red-haired guy with a mohawk killed 4 black people, these same folks would be screaming for the sheriff to investigate every red-haired person with a mohawk. This is about protecting black people from justice.
And the guy with the dreadlocks or "chee wee" if you please that committed the crime didn't violate the civil rights of the victim?
If this guy does not backdown, then it may be the first time anyone has stood up to these racial thugs.
I didn't see it that way before. You are 100% correct.
The NAACP has just assured Jack Strain's re-election in a landslide.
They aren't even worried about real potential civil liberty violations. They are simply trying to rile people up with accusations regarding actions that don't resemble civil liberties violations.
However, they get their power by making people afraid that their liberties might somehow be violated. They gain power through fostering fear, anxiety and doubt.
The Sheriff is following the evidence he has. Nothing more.
The NAACP does not care about civil liberties. They care about power. They care about the murders of these people only as much as they can use them to strengthen their power.
They don't care about Black people. If they cared about them they wouldn't be constantly lying to them to trick them into supporting them. If they cared about them and wanted to help them they could gain their support honestly. Instead they simply want to use them.
What his chee wee hair?
Black on Black crime perhaps?
Black on Black crime perhaps?
