Report: Abbas threatens to resign
Jerusalem Post and AP ^ | July 12, 2006

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to resign, dismantle the Authority and leave the Territories, the London-based A Sharq al Awsat reported Wednesday.

Abbas made the statements during a telephone conversation with US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who requested that he use his authority to help free Cpl. Gilad Shalit. Abbas responded that he no longer had any authority.

Abbas had accused Israel Tuesday of military escalation in the Gaza Strip, saying Israeli forces were targeting civilians and worsening Palestinian hardship.

"The situation is extremely difficult," he told reporters in Amman following talks with Jordanian Prime Minister Marouf al-Bakhit.

"The Israelis are continuously escalating. They are targeting civilians on the one side and the infrastructure of the Palestinian Authority on the other," said Abbas.

Abbas, who was on an impromptu visit to brief Jordanians on the situation in Gaza, later met with Jordan's King Abdullah II.

In the meeting, Abdullah pledged again to "work tirelessly, and in cooperation with all international sides, to ensure the cessation of [Israeli] military operations and ease the tragic situation faced by Palestinians," according to a statement by the king's office.

"Returning to the peace process is now an imperative in order to get out of the current crisis," the king told Abbas, according to the statement.

Earlier, Abbas said IDF troops were destroying electricity and water supplies, as well as government buildings.

"But what is worse is targeting civilians, including families," he said.

"Everyday, you see a big number of women and children being killed."

Abbas said he had asked Arab states and the international community to help resolve the crisis, which was triggered by the June 25 abduction of Cpl. Gilad Shalit by Palestinian terrorists.

Abbas also said he urged United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan "to stop this assault" on the Gaza Strip.

Nearly 60 Palestinians have been killed since the confrontation began 13 days ago.

He must find walking around with a bullseye on his head tiresome.

Release the captured soldier. Crisis resolved. Don't go kidnapping more Israeli soldiers. What's so difficult about understanding that?

Excuse me? Your guys have a kidnapped Israeli soldier whom you won't give back, and your guys have been murdering as many innocent Israeli citizens as possible for as long as anybody can remember, you've sworn to wipe them off the face of the earth, and you're accusing the Israelis of "escalation?"

This is a win-win situation.

If he sticks around, Fatah and Hamas will continue to fight each other.

If he leaves, there will be no Palestinian government figure that's NOT Hamas, so nobody in the West will give them money.

LOL. I didn't know the King of Jordan was a standup comic. The tiresome jive about peace process doesn't hunt in a post 9/11 world with a newly minted freely elected Hamas terrorist government.

Power to the people = power to the terrorists in the palestinian body politic.

Works for me.

Israel tried peace. Israel tried appeasement. Israel tried giving back territory.

Now Israel is trying force...and I suspect the outcome will be substantially better for Israel.

"Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has threatened to resign, dismantle the Authority and leave the Territories, the London-based A Sharq al Awsat reported Wednesday."

Didn't some Arab countries just send some "relief cash" to the terrorists' government (Abbas?). A rather convenient time to bag it for exile in France.

Agree. The best situation will be when a bomb is dropped in Syria on Assad.

Oddly enough, I don't think Abbas is on anyone's assassination list right now. Hamas won't kill him because they need him to keep money flowing in (which is why they haven't offed him yet) and the Israelis won't kill him because he's breeding chaos in the ranks in Pali-land.

Bingo - Arab League just sent millions/billions in cash to "assist" Palestinians (read: Yassir That's ma Baby absconded with untold billions) and now Abbas is splitting with bundles of $$$.

Ah, but that's the interesting part. They *haven't* sent monetary aid. They've *promised* aid, but they haven't delivered any. The Palis were complaining about that last week.

The Palis are being hung out to dry by their "friends".

Assuming you wanted a serious answer: The detainees in Gitmo are all held persuant to the Sept. 18 2001 AUMF, in which Congress authorized the use of the US Armed Forces against "those responsible for the recent attacks launched against the United States." (this includes nations, organizations, persons, and anyone who harbors them)

Hamas is designated an FTO (Foreign Terrorist Organization) but has not been found to be responsible for the 9/11 attacks.

I say "tough." If the Palestinians can't or won't get their house in order, its not Israel's problem. If Abbas really lacks the authority to get Shalit released and restore order in the territory governs, there is no use for the continued existence of the PA. As my tagline indicates, there is a solution to Israel's crisis. I hope Abbas takes up on his threat to leave permanently for London.

(The Palestinian terrorist regime is the crisis and Israel's fist is the answer.)
