DONNA Bandits shot hundreds of rounds of automatic gun fire at Hidalgo County Sheriffs deputies and Border Patrol agents Wednesday from the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.
The deputies were responding to a call from two brothers who swam across the river after an initial gunfight at a ranch in Mexico, Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño said.
Treviño would not identify the two brothers, but said the two U.S. citizens are suspects in other criminal investigations.
The two brothers called 911 around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday and told the operator that they were near the Brewster Ranch south of Donna.
They say an unknown number of gunmen burst into their family ranch in Mexico and killed a ranch hand. The two brothers escaped, but the kidnappers took their father, Treviño said.
The brothers made it across the Rio Grande and called 911.
At least three deputies and four Border Patrol agents took the two brothers back to the riverbank to see if they might find any evidence or the shooters.
Instead, shooters from Mexico fired automatic weapons at the group. The barrage went on for almost 10 minutes, alternating between shots coming from Mexico and the east.
Treviño believes that the shots from the east were most likely on American soil. The heaviest gunfire came after the shots from the east ended, most likely an attempt to divert attention and allow the shooters from the east to cross back.
Border Patrol officials did not respond to phone calls last night.
Treviño plans to search for evidence tomorrow at the sight of the shooting, south of Valley View Road and Military Highway.
If authorities find weapons or casings that can be traced, they might be able to charge someone with attempted capital murder of the agents, deputies and two brothers, Treviño said.
Treviño says that his deputies have never been shot at from the Mexican side of the river.
"This is one of the reasons that I do not allow my deputies to patrol the riverbanks or levies close to the river," Treviño said, "because we do know there are drug gangs and human trafficking gangs that will not hesitate to shoot in our direction to get us out of the area."
what happend to shooting back
Mexican drug dealers calling Texas 911 for help.
And it worked.
"Bizarre" is the only word that comes to mind.
I hate to think what we'll be told when our guys start dying down there.
Odd - I was thinking "mortars."
"what happend to shooting back"
With .50 cal.!! That would shut up the peashooters .
Odd - I was thinking "mortars."
We think alike.
Let me understand this. The Sheriff dosn't send his deputies down by the river because there criminals down there and the deputies may be shot at?
I'M SO UPSET AT THIS REMARK I'm having trouble typing.
Some one help me out...
How about shooting in their direction to get them out of the area?
We need a wall, minefields, a DMZ and helicopter gunship patrols.
Heh. Sad to say, but I suspect we have gotten the type of representation from our surrogates that we deserve. When "the people" wake up and smell the coffee, we may just be able to get things right. But to hedge my bets, I'm not holding my breath...
bizarre, you say...hmmm, retaliation, sounds better....
I work with a nurse whose son is a Border Patrol Agent in California. He says that BP is not allowed to shoot back if shot at.

Presidente Jorge Boosh: A Wall First. A Wall Now.
Sorry, but that is not true.
Ajnin, care to explain the rules of engagement?
Not true.
A few months ago, a bandido who had just robbed some illegals at gunpoint, (in the U.S.) came upon some BP agents, and shot at them, he missed, they didn't, he won't ever shoot at anyone again.
Ping!
Lee Trevino is a sheriff now?
Because no one's got their back. If a sheriff in Pennsylvania sends his deputies into an Amish village and the Amish shoot at the deputies, at least the sheriff and the deputies have the law (county, state and federal in that order) behind them to prosecute and punish the offenders. But on the border, county law enforcement is just swinging in the wind all alone so to speak.
I am glad that what I had heard is not true - I hate to think of our guys not being able to defend themselves.
Can you imagine the response to an American firing hundreds of rounds of automatic gunfire at Sheriff's deputies and federal officials?
Correctly, several hundred officers of every kind would be there almost immediately.
Rather telling that I've heard of no response of any kind to this attack from Mexico.
I personally think that retaliatory airstrikes would be a good idea.
Take a page from Israel's book.
I wonder if Hidalgo Co has an air force?
Dont need any of that heavy artillery. Just send in a Texas Ranger.
Used to happen all the time and the Rangers would shoot back.
I don't see where these US 'authorities" had the presence of mind (cods)to return fire.
Yeah well, then we would be accused of overreacting to a general nuisance. The harpies in the media would be all over it, along with the aclu, peta, nambla, naacp, Dims; you name it. Mexico and the other ankle-biters around the world are allowed a free hand to stick their finger in our eye because, well, just because. After all, they can't do us any real harm, right?
We can only retaliate against viable threats, that is, threats deemed viable by the harpies. The threat to our national and individual sovereignty is not a real threat to them, but is a "viable" threat to us. They have nothing to lose and everything to gain; we on the other hand....... You might think we'd act like we actually have something at stake here wouldn't you???
FGS
Build the wall.
When engaged, take cover and return fire. Simple rules to live by.
Only in the real world. The world we live in now is hardly recognizable from the one I grew up in. Everything must first be vetted through a PC filter of some kind before action can be taken. Sick world my friend. Maybe a national enema would help???
Chi Chi Rodriquez must be his Deputy!
They used to - the Confederate Air Force - but even THAT has moved elsewhere (and changed its name to the Commemorative Air Force or some such PC garbage). They still maintain and fly their vintage planes, though - saw 'em over the Startzville July 4th parade a couple weeks ago.
