Republicans file complaint against Laffey (RI Senate primary)
The Providence Journal ^ | July 11, 2006 | Mark Arensault

national Republican political committee that supports Sen. Lincoln D. Chafee yesterday filed a Federal Election Commission complaint against the senator's Republican primary opponent, Stephen P. Laffey, accusing the two-term Cranston mayor of using taxpayer money to advance his Senate campaign.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee, a group of Republican senators chaired by Elizabeth Dole of North Carolina, claims that a letter from Laffey sent to Cranston residents last month with their tax bills was "a promotional campaign mailing at city taxpayer expense," according to a statement from the NRSC.

A campaign spokeswoman for Laffey called the complaint "ridiculous and frivolous."

This is likely no different than the "constituent updates" that can be mass-mailed and the "capitol report" newspaper columns they write.

This means Stinkin Lincoln is gettin desparate.

The NRSC might as well be headed by Schumer.

One look at the mailings from Patches Kennedy should shut these people up. The last one I saw was at my sister's house about two yrs. ago. Vogue magazine must have done the photo work, I swear.

Steve Laffey has always put notes in the city letters. It is no big deal, except for Linc. Laffey's team needs to find Patches mailings and Steve's homestyle notes. Put them side by side. End of story.

Also, they would do well to remind people that it was Steve Laffey who put a stop to the 47.00 per hour nepotism crossing guard jobs. There were crossing guards (some cop's mom or some tax clerk's cousin) at places where there were no children to cross. None. Laffey threatened to go out there with his wife and kids and doing the crossings himself. That is the kind of guy he is, and he's done some really great things for Cranston.

And then there was the streetsweeper...!

Well, I know that Laffey is no fiery Conservative but I can't stand Chaffee. Choosing between the two, I'd rather have Laffey.

BUT,

I cannot believe that he was stupid enough to do something like that. Even precinct workers know that there are certain things you don't do; e.g. putting campaing flyers in a mail box, etc. is illegal.

One has to question Mr. Laffey's judgment abilities.

Do not contribute anything to the NRSC until all primaries are over if anyone is considering it at all. It is a caucus organization - of which Chafee is a sitting member.

Chafee, as a sitting Senator, is a member of the NRSC. Remember that George Allen aggressively supported Specter in 2004.
