LONDON - Syria is telling Lebanons Hizbollah movement to stop firing rockets at Israel in a conflict sparked by the capture of two Israeli soldiers, Syrias ambassador to London said on Friday.
Hizbollah, an Islamist group represented in the Lebanese government, wants to trade the captives for prisoners held in Israel. In an attempt to increase domestic pressure on Hizbollah, Israeli planes have attacked Beirut and southern Lebanon, killing at least 60 people.
When asked whether Syria was telling Hizbollah to stop firing rockets at Israel, the ambassador, Sami Khiyami, told the BBC: Of course.
This is a movement that is completely independent. We have good relations with it, he said. Hizbollah was created to fight Israels former occupation of southern Lebanon and is backed by both Iran and Syria.
Syria does not wish at all to be involved in the conflict. Its really seeking to ease down tensions and to reach a settlement that would stop completely the violence.
The violence in Lebanon is the fiercest since 1996, when Israel launched a 17-day blitz on Hizbollah strongholds in the south.
The most important thing today is to concentrate on stopping the violence, on negotiating exchange of prisoners and on devising ways and means to bring peace to this poor Middle East, Khiyami said.

Ha,ha, oh, that's a hoot!
Hmm... Israel attacks, Syria offers concessions... if force brings concessions, why should Israel stop? (Ironically this is the same pattern, in reverse, that Syrian-backed terrorists made their careers from.)
Outwardly....behind the scenes???
About as effective as the U.N. was in telling Saddam to stop doing everything he was doing...what a freakin' joke. Sounds like Syria might be getting a little worried about getting their butt kicked...
Oh! ... Oh! ... You bad Hezbollah people! Cease and Desist, I tell you. ... I really mean it this time. ... Please ... Stop right now ... or I will be annoyed.
Bwahahahahahaha! NOthing like a little fly by your Summer retreat to give Assad a reality check. These people must realize that Iran is trying to suck them in. F--ing cowards...
The release of the Israeli soldiers is what needs to occur before any cease fire is considered.
The terrorists started this.
NO! DON'T! STOP!
NO! DON'T! STOP! NO! DON'T! STOP!
NO DON'T STOP NO DON'T STOP NO DON'T STOP
NO DON'T STOP, NO DON'T STOP, NO DON'T STOP, NO DON'T STOP, NO DON'T STOP, NO DON'T STOP!
NO! DON'T! STOP!
NO! DON'T! STOP! NO! DON'T! STOP!
Funny
Just you wait until the Hezzies get their strongly worded memo from the UN... Boy, then they'll be sorry!
Well, they will be when they realize that Israel is going to deliver it on the nose of a 2000lb bomb...
The rest of the sentence: "As soon as all Jews are dead".
What the hell possesses the idiots at the BBC to continue to be these bastards propagandists?
Now that the world KNOWS the Koran instructs Muslims to LIE to "infidels" to protect their lives or further the goals of Islam -- any non-Muslim accepting a Muslim's word on ANYTHING, does so at their own risk.
Semper Fi
Sure. Syria wants Hizbullah to stop right now because Iran doesn't have its nukes ready yet, and Israel might be getting ready to take out Iran's whole program.
The strikes into Saddam's storage area in Bekka Valley must have made a lot of Syrian terrorists nervous.
Perhaps President Bashar al-ASAD just blinked? Perhaps he was not so much in tune with Iran's "Let's fight over Syria" rhetoric?

I don't know. THEY started this all. That tells me that they already have something ready. Something unspeakable and horrid.
