When it is the stated goal of your enemy to destroy you by any means necessary, it is your right to defend yourself by any means necessary. That's proportionality.

They sure did. I have heard that argument about thirty different places today. Never mind that if the Israelis had done little, or nothing, about this kidnapping things would have gotten worse. Never mind that Hezbollah is just the point on the tip of the Syrian / Iranian spear. The Jew Haters have a million arguments to advocate "reasonable" Israeli behaviour that places the Nation of Israel at risk. It's as if the paramount consideration is that Israel behave "correctly". If Israel shoudl be destroyed as a result of being to "moderate":, that's just an incidental side effect.
