Assem Hammoud, 31, the architect of a plan to bomb New York tunnels, was trained and directed by Al Qaida to strike by the end of this year, U.S. and Lebanese officials said.
"Security forces were able to track e-mails and conversations on an extremist Islamic website used to recruit terrorists," the Lebanese Internal Security Forces said in a statement.
Hammoud, nicknamed the "Andalusian prince" in an apparent reference to Islamic emirs who once ruled Spain, was trained in the Palestinian refugee camp of Ein Hilwe near Sidon, the ISF statement said. Ein Hilwe has long been a hotbed of terrorist activity.
The statement said Hammoud was a Syrian national and that he had intended to travel to Pakistan for additional training.

Hammoud, a lecturer at Lebanese International University, was arrested on April 27 and accused of plotting the attacks in the United States. He reportedly has admitted forming a cell to conduct a series of major strikes.
Oh, DUH, it was in the article? I learned to skim-read studying English Lit and it can certainly do one in. When it comes to details.
"...nicknamed the "Andalusian prince..."
Un Chien Andalou? :>)
It wasn't you--it wasn't in the excerpt. I added it to answer your question.
Well, thanks for adding it. I was so curious.... I'm glad to hear it wasn't there. But I am a BAD skimmer.
