9 killed in rocket attack on Haifa

GAMLA: News and Views from Israel

Attack on north resumes: Rockets fired by Hizbullah terrorists from Lebanon land in Haifa; police say nine killed, dozens injured in strike. Israel TV reports of casualties in city. Nahariya, Kiryat Bialik also targeted; additional Katyushas apparently strike Akko area

A siren was heard across Haifa Sunday after a Katyusha rocket fell in the area. Security forces said at least ten Katyusha rockets fell on the Haifa area.

Police said that nine people have been killed and dozens have been injured.

Police say nine people have been killed at the train depot. The rescue of the injured is being delayed after many people abandoned their vehicles due to rockets, leaving them on the road to the Rambam hospital.

The Katyusha barrage also struck Naharia, Kiryat Bialik (check post), Akko, and Rosh Hanikra.

The simultaneous attack took place shortly after 9 a.m. in the morning. Phone networks in the area have been affected.

Ofir from Haifa said: "I see the train depot downtown, on the train tracks. There were four hits and smoke is rising. Hizbullah apparently aimed for the oil refineries."

Karen from Haifa said: "We heard a rocket explode in the harbor area and then in the port."

Over 700 rockets have been fired since the beginning of fighting on the northern border, and the IDF does not rule out that the rockets may reach further south than Haifa. "Areas south of Haifa will receive an advanced warning in the form of a siren," Home Front Commander Yitzhak Gershon said.

Kiryat Bialik is my aunt and uncle's home town. Its suburb to the north of Haifa on the other side of Mount Carmel. I hope to G-d they're alright there.

This tit for tat conflict can not go on. We should lend Israel a few B-52's and let them carpet bomb southern Lebanon until all rocket attacks cease.

No, not from the peace loving Hamas and Hazbullshita. They are merely expressing dissatisfaction with the excessive use of force by Israel. You just don't understand their plight. Besides, it's all Bush's fault anyway.

I was just going to ask where all the stories mentioning the slaughter of women and children nine times in three paragraphs have disappeared to.

Haifa is a center for the chemical, petrochemical and metal industries and is a main provider of services for the entire Northern region of Israel. Haifa's port and railway network, modernisation and expansion of Haifa's airport into an international terminal, and the construction of the cross-city tunnel to streamline traffic are some of the improvements underway. A new marina - resort complex and other major tourism projects will attract visitors world wide to Haifa's sea front.

These Katushyas were aimed at Haifa oil refinery. They missed and hit the bus depot killing at least 6-9 and injuring more

I just emailed my cousin. This is as bad as it gets. When I visited it over 20 years ago, it was a beautiful place. Its terrible when war visits upon family. You never forget where they live.

Hafia hit, people dead = IDF will be telling Olmert to either 1) Invade southern lebanon or 2) hit Syrian targets. Olmert will have to react severely to this or else face major internal critisicm. The CNN internatoinal is talking right now you'd think the IDF is just going to send a few more IAF sorties up to Beruit. CNN is sorely mistaken I believe

That was a close call. My prayers go out to all those wounded and killed by that act of barbarous terrorism. May God avenge them!
