I believe the russians have port facilities with the syrians. They more or less have taken over some port areas for a base giving them a warm water port.

We should stop baiting Russia. We had a window of opportunity to bring Putin to our side. Instead with constand russia baiting from our State Dept we pushed Russia into the arms of Syria and China.
