Sex offender kills teen, self after standoff

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. A 17-year-old Florida girl is dead, victim of a registered sex offender who police say was obsessed with the teen-ager and had been harassing her.

After an hourlong standoff with police in Port St. Lucie, 42-year-old Scott Uslan then killed himself.

Police arrested Uslan last Wednesday after he started making harassing phone calls to Brittany Carleo. But he posted bond and was out of jail on Thursday.

Yesterday, he got a gun and went to the smoothie cafe where Carleo worked and shot her dead.

Police spokesman Rob Vega says it was unfortunate that what he calls "this mad man" was not kept behind bars. Uslan was a registered sex offender because of a previous conviction for providing obscene material to a minor.

Carleo's relatives say Uslan became obsessed with her after she started dating his son two years ago. She eventually got a restraining order.

Registering sex offenders doesn't solve the problem. Lock them up for life.

"police say was obsessed with the teen-ager and had been harassing her."

If the police knew this, then why was this guy on the street? He's a sex offender. Shouldn't that have given them a clue that it was time to arrest this guy?

As if this police spokesman is some neutral 3rd party observer.

Why should taxpayers support them? EXECUTE them!

Go after the Judge. The Police arrested the guy and then the guy made Boind that the Judge set. The police did their job and were powerless to legally hold him once he posted bond.

I direct my ire at a JUdge who allowed such a bond.

I guess the county makes out on this one - they get to keep the posted bond money!

Uslan was arrested (by the police). I blame the judge.

Better still execute them and save the cost of feeding and housing them.

The judge should have put a restraining order on this guy... that would have fixed it. < /s>

And we have all these perverted judges, such as John A, Connor in Ohio and Edward Cashman in Vermont, who are eager to set free even those who have raped little children. Are they corrupt, perhaps bribed by NAMBLA, perverts themselves, or insane?

Exactly. A registered sex offender who is harassing a young girl gets bond? Unbelievable.

Sex offenders should basicly be on parole for the rest of their lives. It's the nature of the crime and the lasting drive to commit it that causes my call for this.

Upon the first verified complant about this beast, he should have been return to prison. If a guy is going to get out and turn his life around okay. If he makes one mis-step like calls to a woman, following her or bothering her once asked to stop, he should go back to prison for a long time.

If a sex-offender is caught scopping kids, throw the book at him. If he's caught peeping in windows or going to close to a pre-school or other schools, throw the book at him.

We must get serious. So far the idea that we're controlling sex-offenders is a joke, and a national disgrace.

Don't think that is accurate. Bondsman will get his money back.
