One Blowhard Down, Plenty More to Go
East Bay Express ^ | July 12-18, 2006 | Chris Thompson

"It all started with Oprah. A few weeks ago, New York Post reporter Philip Recchia heard that Winfrey, recently embarrassed by the plagiarism of memoirist James Frey, had begun using Barrie's service to vet submissions and make sure prospective guests hadn't cribbed someone else's work. Recchia called Barrie and asked how his service worked, and Barrie offered to test a sample chosen by the Post. Recchia e-mailed a 2005 speech by Hillary Clinton. In a matter of minutes, Barrie found five instances of plagiarism."

"Oddly, Recchia decided not to run a story about the senator. (When asked why, he declined to comment, referring all questions back to Barrie.) Instead, he told Barrie the Post wanted to put a famous author through the cribbing test. After Coulter made a sensation with her remarks about the 9/11 widows, Barrie got a second phone call. "Phillip Recchia called back and said, 'Ann Coulter's Godless — that's what we want to run through your service,'" he recalls."

"The next day, her (Ann Coulter's) distributor, United Press Syndicate, announced it was investigating the (plagiarism) claims, and subsequently declared they were without merit."

Ann Coulter surely can take care of herself and I think she has been vindicated.

The part of the story that surprises me is how the New York Post (or should I say Rupert Murdoch) told Reporter Philip Recchia that his story about Hillary's plagiarism had to be killed ["Oddly, Recchia decided not to run a story about the senator. (When asked why, he declined to comment..."]

Rupert now is supporting Hillary's Senatorial campaign. Should she win the Democrat nomination for President, Murdoch will support her no matter who the Republican candidate is. COUNT ON IT!

the core idea is that politicians are not usually paid for originality. They are paid for leadership, implementation, representation, getting things done.

You want a politician to take up other people's good ideas.

Plagiarism is an artist problem. Only the artist claims original authorship of a creation and tries to make money from that.

Never fear. Between now and 2008, some operative on the Right will run everything of relevance she has written (especially her books) through the plagiarism filter to discover her literary sins and have them available for use at a strategic moment should she be the Democratic Party's candidate for President. (The chances of that being influenced by how well she and the Democrats do in 2006.)

Interesting how the Ann Coulter thing died down after the publisher's investigation of the charges. Does any one know the basis for their dismissal? (i.e., you can't plagiarize yourself, fair use doctrine, etc.?)

It is true. Coulter knows it and hit back at the NY Post in a column.

It is a shame, because the Post was the only NY newspaper I buy every day.

Now, I am dropping it.

From the Article.

"Someone at FreeRepublic.com discovered that Barrie's company chairman, Steven Berger, had given $1,000 to MoveOn.org,"

Lol FR.

I'm sure Hillary's constant repeating of the phrase "you know" plagiarizes someone's work.

The title of my original post was screwed up somehow. The title I posted was:

RUPERT ATTACKS ANN COULTER WHILE PROTECTING HILLARY CLINTON FROM THE REPORTING OF HER PLAGIARISM

It would be good if Free Republic could change to the correct title for the whole thread.

Yes she is...... and she's much too smart to write "to" when she means "too".

;-)

When the subject is about "smart".......... you must get it right.

;-)

"Some people are more equal that others"

Yes! It's not a happy thing that these are the same people who also are above the law. There were too many Clintons crimes for normal brains to keep track of but the number of indictments is easy to remember.

The Clintons and so many other other politicos set such an example for our children. We want our young people to set high standard but when the leadership commits such chicanery the kids roll their eyes and say "Whatever."

Hillary would be great for the media business. Even in the NY Post (which I buy daily), there are plenty of liberals. Reporters & columnists. Not the editorials though.

It would be helpful to be able to run Mr. Barrie's personal writings, including his college thesis, through his own "I-xaggerate" program to determine his own plagiarism proclivities.
