IDF Ground Forces Move Into Lebanon, Limited Operation

IDF ground forces moved into south Lebanon on Monday, confirmed a senior army officer but said the operation was limited to clearing land for a buffer zone.

According to an initial report by the Associated Press, “Israeli ground troops entered southern Lebanon to attack Hezbollah bases on the border.” AP quoted a government spokesman who said Monday that the troops “rapidly returned to Israel after conducting their military operations.”

An Israeli military source said at first that “a small military unit destroyed one or two Hizbullah outposts just over the line” in Lebanon Sunday night. "At the moment, there are no military ground troops in Lebanon, and we are working primarily with an air campaign," he added.

More details were forthcoming on Monday afternoon, when the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee was told by a senior army officer that ground troops had leveled a swathe of land inside Lebanese territory. Troops cleared an area extending up to one kilometer from Israel’s northern border in order to stop Hizbullah terrorists from re-establishing their posts.

Defense Minister Amir Peretz reiterated that the IDF operation was aimed at creating a buffer zone to push the terrorists back far enough to prevent rocket attacks aimed at Israel. He added that military activities in the north would not end until the objective is accomplished.

"We intend to complete this operation. We have no intention of allowing anyone to stop us before we complete the creation of a buffer zone," he said.

Meanwhile, in the south of Israel, IDF forces also continue to operate on a second front, carrying out anti-terror attacks in Gaza. Military sources said the forces will continue their activities until kidnapped IDF Corporal Gilad Shalit is returned and rocket attacks on western Negev communities are ended. No injuries reported from the latest landing of Kassams in the area.

The uhhhNnn sees this buffer as the perfect location to place uhhhNnn Troops, so as to have the best vantage point to see the underbellys of Hezbollah (aka, Iranian) rockets and missles.

What the IDF should do, is clear a 25 mile wide buffer zone, put up one sungle barbed wire fence, and then place about 2 million pigs on it...They can raise bacon, make a nice profit..pay for some new tanks..

I think it has already been established any buffer zone needs to be at least 75 miles of so based on rockets launched or ready to be launched. Right? Might that include Damascus?

That is a real measured response by Israel to Lebanon, Syria ,etc.--Even if their whole country is now Israel's buffer zone based on the nastier and nastier weapons the Islamists have aimed at Israel.

The nearest market for hogs would probably be in Greece, plus the Balkans and eastern Europe. The Jews don't eat pigs any more than the Muzzies, but they aren't paranoid about the beasties either.

"A 20-25 mile wide buffer zone??? wow.."

Killing the Muslims is the only solution. The Hizzbhula will just get longer range missiles/rockets. Kill'em all.

The current strategy will solve nothing. It will take troops on the ground and a significant ground operation to solve Israel's problem on its northern border. The area must be cleansed sector by sector and that takes manpower on the ground. The IDF leadership is aware of this, it depends on the politicos stomach to do what is necessary in defense of Israel. The elimination of their enemy and their capacity to wage war.
