Bush's very first "NO" in six years. There has got to be something special about that.

The Senate, for a change, AGREES with SEVENTY percent of the American people on the issue of funding embryonic stem cell research. W is making a huge mistake for himself and the GOP if he vetos this bill. When 70 percent of the American people agree on something, it must be the right thing. When a solid majority of the American people have agreed once and for all on anything, they have NEVER been proven wrong. A veto of this bill will be a triumph of mysticism and superstition over rationality; it puts us in the same mindset as the Ragheads.

Normally I would agree. But this is one rare occassion where the Senate does agree with SEVENTY PERCENT of the American people who want embryonic stem cell research funded federally. IMO the thirty percent who are against this research have succumbed to mysticism and superstition. It is sad that a suit-and-tie mujhaedeen have captured much of my Republican Party.

I have contempt for polls. I also don't spend a lot of time worrying about what the 50+% of Americans who don't vote think.

Fortunately, our government is normally chosen by folks who care enough to at least make the effort to vote - people who are, on average, better informed than the average American.

And polls can find whatever the people who fund them want to find.

What if the 70 percent were taxpayers?
One poll does not matter, true. But many polls are consistent on this issue. A veto of this bill is basically spitting in the face of American public opinion.

We are a republic, not a democracy.

That is because we aren't supposed to be governed by polls.

Most people, including me, don't have time to study every issue and make informed decisions. That is why we elect representatives.

I don't have an opinion on stem cell research. I don't know squat all about it - but I do know I don't want decisions based on polling data!

Wrong....Over 70 % agree with how the press has phrased up the argument and issue. There is NO stopping the funding of this by private or commercial means this is just a bill starting the never ending and ever increasing funding by the FEDERAL government and thus you and me by way of TAXATION.
