NEW YORK (CNN) -- We Americans like to think we're a pretty smart people, even when evidence to the contrary is overwhelming. And nowhere is that evidence more overwhelming than in the Middle East. History in the Middle East is everything, and we Americans seem to learn nothing from it.
President Harry Truman took about 20 minutes to recognize the state of Israel when it declared independence in 1948. Since then, more than 58 years of war, terrorism and blood-letting have led to the events of the past week.
Even now, as Katyusha rockets rain down on northern Israel and Israeli fighter jets blast Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, we simultaneously decry radical Islamist terrorism and Israel's lack of restraint in defending itself.
And the U.S. government, which wants no part of a cease-fire until Israel is given every opportunity to rescue its kidnapped soldiers and destroy as many Hezbollah and Hezbollah armaments as possible, urges caution in the interest of preserving a nascent and fragile democratic government in Lebanon. Could we be more conflicted?

What's up with Lou...he's been ranting incoherently (perhaps no different than ever) on issues lately.
Lou's been heavy on rhetoric and short on the facts and logic...but what else can you expect from CNN?
Just one look at CNN's web page and you'll figure out how anti-Israel, anti-US, the fiends at CNN are.
Among his paranoid and fevered ramblings last night, Michael Savage coined a great label for CNN-"Crescent News Network"
During the Civil War a Catholic historian, whose name eludes me right now, endeavored to uncover the various time periods when peace existed on earth for all of mankind, since man first began recording events. After his exhaustive research he discovered that man has enjoyed roughly 25 years of total world peace during the past 5,000 years or so. Lou Dobbs and his ilk live in a fantasyland while the rest of the world are about the task of dealing with reality.
His point is that it would have been better if Hitler finished the job. What an ass.
This article, and many comments about it, are already posted at http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1668603/posts
This says it all for me ... the fact that Israel even exists seems to be a bothersome and regrettable fact to the esteemed Mr. Dobbs.
Was that the 25 years or so before Adam ate the apple?
That has been sufficient bloodshed for United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan and British Prime Minister Tony Blair to join in the call for an international security force, ignoring the fact that a U.N. force is already in Southern Lebanon, having failed to secure the border against Hezbollah's incursions and attacks and the murder and kidnapping of Israeli soldiers.
The implication is clear. Dobbs thinks Israel shouldn't exist.
Another "America the Pristine"r (anti-trade, anti-immigrants) goes over the edge of his flat world.
hahahaha, - I forget, but I wouldn't doubt it.
I've been wondering if Mr. Dobbs is angling for the anchor's chair. But he seems to be going about it in a rather odd way.
Meant to address my no. 12 to you also.
Depends on what we're talking about. "Peace" used to mean lack of total international violent war. That ended in 1945. Someone could say it means any overt active war between nations and that gets silly ---almost like saying any violence anywhere is war.
We need to be grateful and acknowledge the fact that we're blessed with peace.
Depends on who you mean by "we". Most of this world lives either in war or under the threat of war, thanks to the islamic dogs out there.
If you live in Africa you aer either in war or concerned about it. If you are a Christian living in Idnonesia or a Hindu living in India you are living in constant fear of terror attacks. If you're in the middle east you are also at war, or living under the fear of it coming your way soon.
In the rest of the world there is a false 'peace', with hatreds seething and boiling underneath, just waiting to explode in various forms. Yes, I am grateful for the relative 'peace' our homeland enjoys today, but our nation is at war too, with an invisible enemy who is perpetually seeking to bring bloodshed to our streets. There are wars erupting all over this world, and I don't see that as a sign of any true 'peace'.
I couldn't get much further in the article so I wonder if he ever stated that peace could be achieved if Israel would withdraw to the pre-1967 war borders.
Lou's as misinformed about this conflict as he is about outsourcing and free-trade.
Whether that particular statement is verifiable or not, if you're really into that sort of thing you can at least be certain of the fact that you're going to die (probably alone) as so will everyone you know.
Oh yeah, also the sun's going to explode and destroy all forms of life in the solar system.
Enjoy.
