A day after President Bush vetoed a measure that would have expanded federal funding of embryonic stem cell research, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Thursday authorized a $150 million loan to fund the state's moribund stem cell institute, which has been stalled by lawsuits.
The move has distinct political benefits for the governor who is seeking to put as much distance as possible between himself and the deeply unpopular president as he seeks re-election this year.
Schwarzenegger said the state cannot afford to wait to fund the critical science associated with stem cells.
"I remain committed to advancing stem cell research in California, in the promise it holds for millions of our citizens who suffer from chronic diseases and injuries that could be helped as a result of stem cell research," Schwarzenegger said in a letter to his finance director authorizing the loan.
Lawyers with ties to anti-abortion and anti-tax groups have sued, arguing that the state's stem cell agency, the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, is unconstitutional. Voters created the agency in 2004 when they passed Proposition 71, which authorized $3 billion in bonds to be sold to fund 10 years of research that the federal government will not fund.
On April 21, an Alameda County Superior Court judge ruled the institute was a legitimate state agency. But if opponents continue to contest the agency in court, they could hold up the institute's financing until at least next year.
Arnold once again flips the finger to the conservative political base that helped put him in office.

All kidding aside there is a great deal of double talk about stem cells. The country is crawling with stem cells and there should be an easy way to harvest them. Pay mothers $1000 for the umbilical cord blood.

Much of the ranting is by pro abortion groups and the "invitro companies" trying to make a buck.
I just got a phone call...it was someone from Arnold's crowd asking for me... wanted to invite me to something... I cut him off and said "I am sorry, but I am not accepting calls from Mr. Schwarzenegger today..thank you!" and hung up.
WTF ? Maybe the little Austrian f*$% should run under his Kennedy colors.
While diseases are already being cured by adult stem cells, there is zero evidence that anything will ever be cured by embryonic stem cells. This is just a boondoggle for the people who collect and research the cells.
There would appear to be very little left for the Austrian to do by way of pissing off the people who sent him to Sacramento.

Well, not that anybody cares, but I think we could and should not only wait, but let the private sector lead the way as we usually have without suffering from private sector profit phobia like a buncha Commies!!!

Alas, there are so many "will of the voters" issues in line ahead of this one that need special attention. Like Prop 187, and Prop 22, and the fact that we fired Gray Davis's top gal Susan Kennedy in the Recall. What about that "will of the voters"?
