Nope they didn't forget, they killed their Chechen version of Bin Laden recently, Baslayef or whatever his name was. That is what Israel is also trying to do, kill the head of Hezbollah and destroy the ability to attack. Same as Russia but of course Russia must keep it's patron Iran happy at the end of the day. Russia is gleeful at the ME turmoil and is likely hoping it will continue. This keeps oil prices high and translates into billions for them.
So what does Israel have to offer Russia? Iran and Syria can offer them lots of contracts and give them a foothold in the Middle East.

The bombing campaign has turned many parts of Chechnya to a wasteland: even the most experienced war reporters I have spoken to told me they have never seen anything in their careers like the destruction of the capital Grozny.
