Mexican President Vicente Fox told radio listeners in his country that the idea of an amnesty for illegal aliens in the U.S. is dead at least for a time.
Fox said President Bush advised him of the political realities of passing his "comprehensive immigration reform plan" this year during a flight from St. Petersburg, Russia, to Madrid, Spain. Congress will shortly be adjourning until the November election.
Fox said Bush "pointed out that this period is very short, there are only two or three weeks before Congress members go on the election campaign. So the chance of the immigration issue reaching approval in the House of Representatives and reaching join approval isn't very high."
A White House spokesman acknowledged Bush made the comment to Fox, but said that doesn't mean the president won't be back promoting his immigration plan before the end of the year.

That got my attention too.
Probably didn't use those exact words, it was a radio address.
Perhaps more skilled FReepers than I would know where to find / post a link ? (hint hint)

Yep, he couldn't run for another term.
As to when the new dude starts, not sure, probably like us here, a few months to set up a team.
The election looser, a lefty liberal is doing the Al Gore swan dance claiming election fraud, looking for more recounts and the like.

WND seems to have taken liberties in translation. Every story on the web re: Fox's comments about what Bush said at the G-8 Summit on the topic suggest that it will be very difficult (not dead) to pass immigration legislation this year...and none of them use the term "illegals."
Here's one example. More will pop up with same comments by searching Google News in Spanish for "no amnistia fox bush"

The "new guy" (Calderon) is the same as the "old guy" (Fox). Calderon assumes the presidency for a 6-year term on December 1st.

That's the least of his problems. What's he gonna do with 20 million recent returns?
To: IrishMike
I'm sure the two presidentes had this conversation as they were crying in their Tecates.

When the illegals realize the party is over and that existing laws are being enforced, I see lots of folks returning home with or without the help of the government. The states are already busy making this a reality because American citizens are tried of being the Welfare Dept. for Mexico.

Hmmm, makes me wonder out loud if Fox was traveling with Bush, if so, why?
Were they sharing a flight to cut costs? (/sarcasm)
If they weren't on the same flight, has it come to the point now, where Bush reports to Fox on a daily basis?

Fox said Bush "pointed out that this period is very short, there are only two or three weeks before Congress members go on the election campaign. So the chance of the immigration issue reaching approval in the House of Representatives and reaching join approval isn't very high." Yes, election time is not a good moment.

I don't think so - the House is the only thing stopping this, and with a 2 year election cycle for them, a close majority, and a presidential election in 2008 - if the Rs hold the House in 2006, any bill resembling the current Senate bill, will not pass.

You nailed it! And it doesn't matter which party has the majority. You better start taking Spanish lessons.

Indeed. Its after the elections that they'll really try to screw us. I agree with you. After our November elections, there will be a push by Bush as never before for amnesty. Fox needs this for his legacy and Bush will oblige if at all possible.
(Says Bush told him no chance for legislation this year)
This statement is just for show and not a very good one at that.
