After 2 years, same-sex marriage icons split up (Bush's fault)
Boston Globe ^ | July 21, 2006 | Michael Levenson

They told the world that their relationship was like any other and that's why they should be allowed to marry. Now, friends say, they are showing once again that they are just like any other couple: Two years after getting married, Julie and Hillary Goodridge, lead plaintiffs in the state's landmark gay marriage case, are splitting.

Mary Breslauer, a spokeswoman for the couple, confirmed the separation last night. She said the couple are focused now on trying to do what is best for their daughter, Annie, 10.

``Julie and Hillary Goodridge are amicably living apart," Breslauer said in a telephone interview. ``As always their number one priority is raising their daughter, and like the other plaintiff couples in this case, they made an enormous contribution toward equal marriage. But they are no longer in the public eye, and request that their privacy be respected."

Breslauer said they have not filed for divorce. She would not comment on their plans and offered no other details.

Supporters of gay marriage had cast them as the face of their cause: happily together for two decades, financially stable, loving parents, and in 2004, able to legally wed. Julie Goodridge, 49, is president of NorthStar Asset Management, an investment advisory firm, and Hillary, 50, is program director for the Unitarian Universalist Funding Program.

``I just think this really doesn't say anything," Breslaeur said yesterday when asked by a reporter about the significance of the separation. ``Our families, like other families, can face tough times, with many making it through those moments, but some not."

Since gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in May 2004, about 7,300 same - sex couples have obtained licenses, according to a Globe survey earlier this year. There have been about 45 divorces; the number of separations has

Any suggestions for ending the 50%+ divorce rate for straight couples?

Do away with no fault divorce.Require pre-marital counceling.

Don't allow second marriages. 1st time divorce rate is significantly below 50%.

Once their common cause of thrusting their lifestyle on all and destroying traditional marriage was done, so were they.

Right you are: In order to destroy the concept of marriage, you first have to degrade and weaken it as an institution. "Gay marriage" is an attack from inside the fortress called "family."

yes, have the Massachusetts supreme court force the legislature to make up a new law calling divorce something else and completly change the meaning of the word, then have the MA state senate not allow anyone in the state to vote on it even though the voters petitioned to vote on it, oh sorry that's what they did to marriage

"Divorce rate" is one of those terms that is great for bar bets and never ending arguments. The majority of people who get married, get married only once. And the majority of people who get divorced, get divorced only once. Most divorce comes from a smaller minority who have many marriages (and divorces). Depending on how you think and argue about "divorce rate" anyone can win!

I'll take the 1965 Dodgers against the 1927 Yankees.

(Although the content of this comment has nothing to do with lesbian relationship, I hope I'm still on point.)

That's cool, because the '98 Yankees would beat them both.

Two words: Koufax, Drysdale.

(And to stay on thread, it isn't too surprising that gay and lesbian marriages should suffer divorces in a way that is similar to straight marriages. This particular case is tough with the involvement of children.)

Yes, make any couple who gets divorced pay all of the taxes they saved while being married.

Two numbers: 125 & 50.

I would think that children are less of a problem with gay divorces. There can be only one biological parent.

"There have been about 45 divorces; the number of separations has not been reported."

Of course not. I've known gay and lesbian people my entire adult life, and in my experience the homosexual relationships are far more volatile than heterosexual relationships. Among the men, the homosexual norm is promiscuity. Not all the gay men, of course, just most of the ones that I knew personally. Among the woman, the homosexual norm was serial monogamy, with the average relationship lasting about five years.

I would bet that the number of separations among the gay marriage couples is far higher than the number of separations among hetereosexuals. That's probably why it isn't being reported, since the template is to make gay marriages morally equivalent to hetereosexual marriage.

Another factoid: I looked up the population of Massachusetts on google. Assuming that 0.6% of the population is lesbian and 1.8% is gay male (numbers that I read somewhere), there would be about 152,400 homosexuals living there. My figures show that 4.7% of the homosexual population in that state have chosen to get married - not the same proportion as the heterosexual population, certainly. If you want to increase the number of homosexuals there, the proportion getting married shrinks accordingly. My point is that there is no mass movement among homosexuals to get married - not that I needed convincing about that point. It's interesting to see it shown in the numbers, though.

Couples living together for years - out of wedlock - who then get married split up at alarming rates.

Happened to a couple I know really well. Lived together for over a decade and were divorced before their first anniversary.
