PA Governor Rendell: City law ‘feeds off’ hatred

Hazleton Mayor Louis Barletta and Gov. Ed Rendell traded barbs over a new city ordinance that cracks down on illegal immigrants, with Rendell saying during a Thursday stop in Scranton that it had been drafted by “mean-spirited” politicians who “feed off hate and divisiveness.” Barletta disagreed, saying the ordinance simply upholds the law. The only mean-spirited remarks that Barletta said he could recall were made by two members of the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs, who publicly called Hazleton a “Nazi city” and said that Latinos would never assimilate into American culture. The Associated Press and The (Scranton) Times-Tribune reported on Rendell’s take on the ordinance and remarks he made Thursday in Scranton while attending a gathering of young professionals. Rendell called the ordinance and similar crackdowns on illegal immigrants a “mean-spirited” work of politicians and said initiatives such as Hazleton’s are skewing the national debate over illegal immigrants. “A lot of this is being pushed by politicians who absolutely want to keep your eyes away from real stuff,” Rendell said Thursday. “They feed off that and divisiveness. The only ones I want to hear speaking up and complaining about immigration are the Native Americans who we screwed.” Barletta issued a written response to Rendell’s comments Friday. “As a former mayor of Philadelphia, Governor Rendell should understand the desire to protect the legal citizens of a city,” Barletta said in the news release. “As the governor, Mr. Rendell is aware of the current financial situation of the City of Hazleton , where it is important to make every dollar count, where every dollar should be spent on the legal residents of Hazleton.” Barletta said he wants to know how upholding a law is “mean-spirited or divisive” and said he was “very surprised” when reading remarks made by the governor. “I was surprised with the governor’s comments – especially since two members of his Governor’s (Advisory) Commission on Latino Affairs have gone on to say some pretty mean-spirited things at me and at the city with no response from the governor’s office,” Barletta said. The mayor referred to remarks made by Anna Arias, who spoke out against the IIRA during a recent Hazleton City Council meeting and called him a “monkey” during a television interview. “I would say that calling the mayor a ‘monkey’ during televised interviews, as the representative of the governor did, is also mean-spirited,” Barletta wrote. “The ordinance is not motivated out of anything other than a desire to protect the legal residents of Hazleton and make every precious taxpayer dollar go as far as it can.” A spokeswoman from the governor’s office announced shortly after Arias made the remarks that Arias was not speaking on behalf of Rendell or the Governor’s Advisory Commission on Latino Affairs. Arias issued a news release that essentially said the same. Barletta, however, said during a late Friday interview that he was surprised Rendell didn’t offer a comment of his own. “If I ever had said that same thing to her or anyone else, they would’ve asked for my resignation the next day,” Barletta said. “I think I deserve the same respect I’ve shown. That’s why I’m taken aback by the governor – who did not respond to her hateful comments.” Rendell reportedly expressed concerns about illegal immigrants, saying Thursday that he agrees with President Bush’s proposal to set up a guest-worker program that would allow aspiring immigrants to take jobs “that Americans don’t fill” as a way to help impoverished families seek a better life. “I’m upholding the laws of this country,” Barletta continued. “It’s the law. Illegal is illegal. I guess we shouldn’t uphold laws any longer – or am I missing something?” Barletta’s ordinance, which was approved by city council, makes English the official language of Hazleton and makes all documents available in English only – unless superseded by state or federal law. It also prohibits businesses found hiring illegal immigrants from operating within city limits for five years and cancels any and all contracts those businesses may have with the city. Additionally, the ordinance fines landlords $1,000 per person per day for knowingly renting to any illegal alien.

"Fast Eddie the Rat Rendell is counting on the illegal vote to keep his fat cheesesteak-powered ass in office. That's why he vetoed the bill which would have required photo ID for voters in Pennsylvania. A Demokrat fears an honest election just like a vampire fears sunlight."

More tagline material.

Which was the most limp voter ID bill ever...that dared to ask for something as weak as an *gasp* electric bill as proof of identity! What Fast Eddie the Mobster objected to most was removing the voting machines in Philly from private homes and Democrat precinct headquarters.

I'm not familiar with PA politics or Governor Rendell. So I went to his website to see his party affiliation, etc. I clicked on "Governor's Homepage:" http://www.governor.state.pa.us/governor/site/default.asp?governorNav=| There is no mention of party affiliation. But their are three prominent links to tax relief. He "looks" conservative.

I noticed the PA logo. Is that the keystone for the keystone state? http://www.50states.com/bio/nickname4.htm It reminds me of the Heinz logo. Did the Heinz company adopted the state logo? Too bad Senator John Heinz died in a plane accident in 1991: http://www.library.cmu.edu/Research/Archives/Heinz/HJH_Bio.html

When I first read about it, it reminded me of the sabotage attempt on the plane of Governor Winthrop Rockefeller as presented in "The Secret Life of Bill Clinton" by Ambrose Evans-Pritchard. Maybe someone should copy the appropriate chapter and give it to Teresa Heinz Kerry.

I love it, and I love this mayor! The law is the law and it must be enforced whether the governor likes it or not. Let's hear it for Barletta for President!

Make no mistake-Rendell is a Democrat. He is the former mayor of Philadelphia and former head of the DNC (prior to Terry McAuliffe).

Anyone who calls Hazelton a "nazi city" sounds pretty mean-spirited to me. God bless Mayor Barletta!

It's extraordinary how Rendell and other "tolerant and compassionate liberals" get nasty and mean when their political ambitions get thwarted.

This sucker Rendell will soon find out he's on the wrong side of the issue.

Anti-illegal is a consensus issue---and politicians are hearing from both sides with the exact same message----"stem the tide of illegals and send them back from whence they came."

Rendell is touting the Democratic party line that I hear from my PA Democratic friends: if you express an interest in border control, then you are an agent of Fox News and the Republicans, trying to divert America's attention from "real issues" like poverty and health care.

Drop him a line and give him some support.

Gladly done.

My compliments to you Mayor Barletta for your courageous stand against illegal immigration. Illegal immigration is one of the most serious problems America is facing today in my opinion. We can not support all the poor people of the world, we must put the needs and rights of American citizens first. Even legal immigrants who refuse to assimilate into our American culture and language can not be accommodated with special privileges at the expense of overburdened American taxpayers.

Bravo Mayor Barletta, please stand firm on this issue and do not capitulate to Governor Rendell's politically correct agenda.

Thanks for the email address DD.

Thanks for sending Barletta a note. I like to let politicians like him know that they have the support of a lot of people.

Even my Democrat sister hates this guy. I think it was the Philadelphia citizenry and the eastern third of the state that got him elected. That, and probably alot of fraud at the poll sites.

Didn't seem like too many in the western and central side wanted him.

Of course, the Democrat politician crooks in Pittsburgh love him.

I moved from my home town of Pittsburgh out of state for 24 years and came back in '99. Maybe I'm just more aware in my middle years of age but this state is full of excessive greed in politics, in Harrisburg and locally. All that's missing is a Big Dig.

I'm seriously considering moving from my beloved state and home town.

Didn't Free Republic once upon a time have a quote of the day site? If they still do, I nominate that as a quote of the day.

Original source.

My quote to be submitted is, "As far as I'm concerned, it doesn't concern me."
