Moderates: Dems should talk about religion By LIZ SIDOTI, Associated Press Writer Published: Sunday, July 23, 2006 Updated: Sunday, July 23, 2006
DENVER (AP) - Rather than being bashful, Democrats should openly talk about their religious beliefs and moral values, say moderates urging the party to court voters beyond the traditional Democratic base to win control of the GOP-run Congress this fall and the presidency in 2008.
"If we continue to have this perception in the Democratic Party that faith can't be discussed, we'll continue to lose elections based on wedge issues," said Terrance Carroll, a Colorado state representative.
The view, espoused by Democrats attending the centrist Democratic Leadership Council's annual meeting, could irritate liberals who advocate a strict separation of church and state.
But moderates claim that invoking religion will help Democrats connect with churchgoing Americans - including Republicans and independents - who polls show are more apt to vote with the GOP.
"Democrats have run from the values issues. We now have to deal with those issues of faith," said Randal Mangham, a state representative in Georgia.

I thought the Dems had this coming November sewed up. Just keep on doin' what you're doin', guys, and you'll take it walking away! We Hate Bush, Bush Lied and People Died, Culture of Corruption, Gay Marriage For All... what's not to like, right? The last thing you need to worry about is all that G-d stuff. Ugh. Leave that to flyover country.
Jean Giraudoux (1882 - 1944)
Again, to quote Mark Twain......"They've got the words but they don't have the music."
Maybe not an exact quote but you get the idea.
Its a riot when they start quoting scripture incorrectly, sometimes even reversing the message.
Isaiah 48:22
I like the quote....
Well, except when Jesse and Al and their colleagues invite them to their churches to endorse them and let them campaign speak to the congregation...but who's counting?
Yep Kerry misquoting the Bible really got my vote--NOT.
Its hard to talk religion when one is totally ignorant of it. All the Dems have come out with, are religious justifications of their old stand bys.
"Feeding the poor is Biblical so you will burn if we can't go into your pocketbooks and take money-its for the poor, stupid!"
"Babies aren't human so its OK to kill them. But murderers ARE human so we can't kill them."" Yep, THAT'll win the Christian right.
That said, talking the talk and walking the walk are two different things. People will always spot a phony.
There ... fixed it
That's more like the truth about who they really are. But the Drive By Media won't acknowledge it.

Same ole same ole. "How can we put a new coat of lipstick on this pig and get the rubes to buy it?"
This is interesting to watch. They never get past reinterating their platform and calling it values. In this story you can see why. They know what they believe and want to use religous terms and snipets to back that up. They don't surrender their will to the Lord. Will we have a bunch of ex-communicated Catholics saying they know better than the bishops, again?
Unfortunately, they have a major problem here. It's sort of like Dean saying he had to take the flag from Rush.
The DUmmies don't WANT the flag, and they certainly don't want religion, especially those icky fundies.
That should take all of 2 seconds.
To them, "religion" is playing with snakes and going to NASCAR races. "Content" never comes into the picture for them.
I do recall the Reverend "and the glory of the Lord shall be REVEALED" Algore working up a sweat on the campaign trail.
That worked out well for all of us...
