FDR and Lincoln never served in the military. I don't think James K. Polk had military credentials and he increased the size of America by 50% much of it through armed conflict.

And, on the other hand, Jimmy Carter served in the military and gave us the mullahs in Iran.

Lincoln served a total of 90 days, his first 30 day enlistment as a Captain and the other two as a Private, he had amazing insights in the operations of War, that would be obvious later.
Polk attained the rank of Colonel and served in the Calvary.

Actually Lincoln did serve in the Black Hawk War.
He was a totally ineffective militia captain. He claimed he spent most of the war getting his company lost. Also after his militia term was up he promptly volunteered to serve as a private but the war ended before the ink was dry.

Same for Thomas Jefferson, who more than doubled the U.S with the Louisiana Purchase.

As I recall, Lincoln served as a captain in the Black Hawk war in 1832, so he had some military chops.

Hold on here. The job of a President of the United States is to MOTIVATE people - particularly those individuals in the US Congress. That is what's makes successful President.

IIRC, Lincoln was the captain of a local militia unit during the Blackhawk wars, circa 1845.
