Can somebody define "pitched" battle? And how is it different then your run-of-the-mill battle?

English is a very flexible language but sometimes I get confused with all the possible variations.

I think a 'pitched' battle is one that is set in a particular location.

As opposed to a 'running' battle where both sides are mobile

WIKIPEDIA
A pitched battle is a battle where both sides choose to fight at a chosen location and time and where either side has the option to disengage either before the battle starts, or shortly after the first armed exchanges.
