Cleveland National Forest Horse Fire Incident
Incident Contact: (619) 590-3160
Incident: Horse Wildfire
Released: 2006-07-24 21:32:00 San Diego, CA, July 24, 2006
The Horse Fire started on the Cleveland National Forest, on Sunday, July 23, 2006 at approximately 5:30 a.m. The incident is being managed by a California Interagency Fire Management Team. The fire is burning in Pine Creek and Hauser Wilderness Areas and is approximately 5% contained. The Forest has closed National Forest lands south of Interstate 8 to entry for safety reasons. This closure effects the following recreational sites and designation areas; Pacific Crest Trail from the International Border with Mexico north to Interstate 8, Pine Creek Wilderness, Hauser Wilderness, Pine Creek Trailhead, Corral Canyon OHV Area, Bear Valley Road, and Espinoza Trail.
Currently, the fire is over 7,000 acres and is spreading primarily on the northern and southern flanks. The fire is burning in steep and rough terrain with brush and chaparral that last burned in the Laguna Fire in 1970. Based on the fire investigation, the cause of the fire was an abandoned campfire in a side drainage of Horsethief Canyon. Evidence collected at the scene suggests that the campfire was left by undocumented immigrants.
The Sheriff and California Highway Patrol are continuing voluntary and mandatory evacuations in and around the wildfire area. Over 1,500 homes are threatened as well as over 100 commercial properties. The communities of Carveacre, Skye Ranch, Corte Madera, Japatul Valley Road, Pine Valley, Lake Morena, and Guatay are still threatened. For more information on the fire, please call 619-590-3160. This is the second major fire this year that we know was started by a campfire set by transient, probably illegal aliens.
This is going to be an expensive year for this country for not guarding the borders. The Brins Fire in Sedona cost approximately $6,400,000 to fight. Too soon to guestimate the Horse. But it would buy a good bit of fencing for the cost of one fire like this.
I am not implying that either fire was set on purpose, but what I am saying is we had to spend a ton of money to deal with the accidents created by people who were not supposed to be here.
Someone who's tracking the illegal immigration issue ought to add this fact into the other information they are using.

But I thought illegal immigrants were good for our economy? /sarc

They're just burning the forest that Americans refuse to burn.

Ummm, what kind of evidence do you find in a fire that indicates it was a campfire left unattended by illegal immigrants? Just sayin'...

I'm not a forester, but...
I suspect this fire is the result of the intersection of two phenomenon:
1. Failure to control our borders
AND
2. Failure to overcome objections of environuts and homeowners who have
blocked harvesting of dead and dying trees.
Put illegals lighting fires in a forest that's loaded with tons of wood
that should have been cleared a decade or so ago...and this is what
you get.
Not to worry, we'll pay for cleaning up the mess.

I'm sure that some Senatorial aide is now checking to be sure the
"comprehensive (amnesty) package" will keep illegals out of jail for
burning down the USA!
Or they're drafting language for such a purpose for insertion into
the amnesty bill.

Evidence provided by the forest service:
Evidence collected at the scene suggests that the campfire was left by undocumented immigrants.
Welcome to FR, 'meauran'. You'll find a nice group of close-minded bigots here!

The Sierra Club considered coming out for controlling "the fragile
ecosystems" of the USA in the early 1990s by calling for preventing
the invasion across our southern border.
BUT...they realized that might make them sound like Republicans, so they're
(effectively) all for making a litter box out of our desert and draining
our water resources.
As long as it's just illegals doing the job.

That was a pretty big media frenzy when they had Sierra Club elections, was it not?
They do the jobs Americans won't do though, so its ok.

The area this fire has started in is sooo dry, that starts in this area have been happening constantly the last two or three weeks, mostly from lighning. It's burning in brush. It's just a natural thing that chapparal burns.
This is not timberland. This particular incident, unlike others I can point to, may be more the natural inclination for brush to burn than, say like the fire last week in the Fishlake NF or the several fires burning in Washington right now that are burning in dead wood.
If you want ammo for the environmental whackos causing more damage because they won't let the FS or other land managers do what they need to do, I have plenty of examples for you, though.
The last time this particular area burned was in 1970, so there is plenty of fuel available.
Bit you are right. This is a fire that we will pay for started by a person who shouldn't have been here.

The = They (I dint either).

They're just burning the forest that Americans refuse to burn Actually, US citizens do quite nicely at setting fires. It is an annual ritual for the citizen rednecks in SW Virginia to start a whole host of forest fires.
Plus one really bad fire was started 5 years ago by an idiot female forest ranger.

This is not far from the big fires of last week up by Big Bear. This entire area has been dealing with a lot of lightning starts on an almost daily basis.
This calender year Southern California has had 1,869 fires for 120,345 acres as of yesterday. And we haven't even gotten to their real fire season when the Santa Anas start.
One hot fire year. Today or maybe tomorrow, the country will have burned 5 million acres, well on the way to a record year.
