RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - Governor Tim Kaine says the electric chair should not be an option for executions in Virginia.

Kaine was asked Tuesday in his monthly program on Washington Post Radio about last week's electrocution of Brandon Hedrick, the first person to die in the electric chair in two years. Hedrick chose electrocution over lethal injection.

Kaine said Tuesday ... quote ... "I think it should be lethal injection, period." He calls it ... quote ... "an odd quirk" that inmates get to choose the electric chair as an option.

I knew this was going to happen. Kaine is slowly trying to eliminate capital punishment in Virginia. Kilgore did not drive this home enough. Instead, Kilgore got "skert" of the Washington Compost et al.

Kaine has already delayed one death sentance.

family members (and friends) of the victim should be alowed to use small knives on the tied up murderers body...the death of 1000 cuts...and let it get as interesting as those family members want to let it.

Nitrogen asphyxiation - cheapest, cleanest, nontoxic, no mess, no fuss, painless way to execute someone.

Strap them down, put on the mask, start the flow of 100% nitrogen, wait 5 min, look for brain wave activity. If there is brain activity, wait another 5 min and check again. Once brain activity ceases, get the body bag and ship out.

I agree with him on this one. Energy has become way too expensive. Medicine is also very expensive so I would support high speed lead poisioning only.

Even if one of my family had been killed by someone, there is NO WAY, I am going to risk my own health by cutting into someone after they have been in prison for any length of time.

The satisfaction would not be worth the risk of HIV infection.

Consider that lead is toxic, and very likely that the blood is likely to be HIGHLY toxic with HIV and Lord only knows what else.

Understand the thought, but I would rather this be a much cleaner process than have a massive blood splatter and bleed out.

How messy would CO asphyxiation be?

CO - Carbon Monoxide is TOXIC and dangerous to the people administering the execution. It is also flammable.

Hanging is WAY expensive.

Consider the cost of the law suits as cruel and unusual punishment. Consider that the rope can not be reused as multiple use can cause the rope to fail. Consider that with a heavy enough inmate, you will actually rip the head off the body... lots of toxic blood and a real mess to clean up.

2 each rounds of .45 ACP applied to the head cost about a half a dollar. The gun needed to shoot them can be had for $500 used. One pistol should last over 2000 executions.

Did I miss the part where they said anything about HIV in the story? Throw his ass in the grave first and then shoot him if that is a concern.

Yep. Problem is, we've gotten away from what was once the most inexpensive and least messy way of execution because we have no trained hangmen in the U.S.A.

A properly performed hanging is not only clean and quick, but a powerful deterrent from would-be criminals seeing the perp twisting in the wind.

The victims of these murdering bas-tds never had the option of choosing their manner of death at the hands of the murderers.

In England, pickpockets were once hung from Tyburn Tree. Other pickpockets would work the crowd.
