Officials ask witnesses to the nearly 35,000-acre Canyon fire to call them
Someone's smoking habit started the immense fire that burned for more than a week west of Patterson and needed 2,000 firefighters from around the state to control, state fire investigators said. Investigators with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection said this week that forensic evidence from where the Canyon fire started near Del Puerto Canyon Road on July 9 could tell them who started the fire.
They have determined that a number of people were present when the fire started, and investigators would like these witnesses to come forward.
The Canyon fire burned nearly 35,000 acres over 10 days, sending clouds of smoke through the northern San Joaquin Valley, and cost more than $14 million to control.
According to the CDF, the fire destroyed 11 homes — mostly cabins — and five outbuildings and damaged a residence and five outbuildings. Firefighters saved several other buildings, though the steep terrain and low humidity made their efforts more challenging.
Ten firefighters suffered injuries, mostly because of the smoke and heat.

The cheaper cigarettes do not self extinguish as readily as the major brands.

Put any off the shelf pyrotechnic, i.e. firecracker, screamers, spinners, smoke grenades, roman candle, fountains, M80 or similar type devices.....something most boys knew by the age 10 when I was growing up. We did such on Halloween night (when it wasn't dry BTW) as boyish pranks back then. Of course nowadays, kids aren't given much trust or responsibility to use good judgment with such entertainment.
Much like, it was really nothing out in the county to see a 10 yr old / 12 yr old walking or riding his bike carrying an unloaded .22 rifle or .410 shotgun (shells in his pockets), either going squirrel/rabbit/dove hunting or just target practice. No one ever thought twice about it 'cause that kid had better have definitely had parental permission to have the weapons out that day and also, permission as to where he was hunting or target practicing. If not, the kid almost always would get severe corporal punishment (most parents would be in jail today for dishing out the level) not to mention heavy restriction and loss of firearm privileges for 1-2 yrs.
Unfortunately, society, in general, has become so paranoid because we all know now that ownership of personal responsibilities and decisions isn't a norm and expected anymore. Go out West and it is still like that away from the larger cities.

I don't think She Lyin can hear you, as articulate as your post was. And I'm starting to wonder if the smokers use FR with a hidden agenda, i.e., the backing of the powerful tobacco industry. She Lyin's constant use of repetitive mini-dramas- ("And needless to say, I never go out anymore, blah blah blah") make me wonder if her cutback in smoking expenses aren't from rolling her own, but maybe tons of free complimentary smokes from the folks most grateful for her constant harping.
