I think it is necessary for people to be in control of their life and death decisions. I want to decide for myself what to eat, how many children to raise, and when I pull the plug on my dad.

I find it interesting that to support the idea that it is "necessary for people to be in control of their life and death decisions", two of your three examples are about you controlling life and death decisions over other people.

My family, my potential children can't decide how many children I have. My dad can tell me how close to death he will need to be before I pull the plug. He can only tell me this while he is able to communicate. People should decide for themselves when they want to be taken off of life support, so they should make it clear in their will.

"The reason was that Darwin and Marx as scientist and Wagner as artist had seemingly made final the separation between man and his soul. Their labors had shown that feeling, beauty, and moral values were illusions for which the world of fact gave no warrant. Man was no longer a cherished creature of the gods, first because there were no gods, and second, because cherishing was foreign to the nature of things."

Joseph Mengle would be so proud.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; Before you were born I sanctified you..."

...ooops...I forgot...we're only supposed to use the desensitized, sanitized, don't-wanna-offend-the-masses-terminology..."just body parts", "blobs of cancerous tissue", "growths of non-sentient primate flesh"

*sigh*

How do you know animals don't have souls?

"We have met with not a few clerics who defend this position with utmost steadfastness and vigor, yes one could say almost brutally. Usually they defend their position with the unstated intent of deepening and widening the chasm between man who has soul and soulless (how do they know that?) animals... "

Actually, I do believe they have souls. It is the spirit within the animal soul that raises humans out of the animal kingdom. Can you tell me when the spirit comes into the soul, the human spirit, not the Holy Spirit ... I already know that one.

"Once you are on the slope, you tend to move down it."

I like tigons and ligers but this is going too far!!!!

"Creating chimeras, she said, by mixing human and animal gametes (sperms and eggs) or transferring reproductive cells, diminishes human dignity."

http://www.organicconsumers.org/Patent/human-animals.cfm

Humans have not had dignity since Descent of Man.

I know people have souls, Darwin didn't think so.

Do any of you know how to post? Can someone post the above info??

"But creating human-animal chimeras—named after a monster in Greek mythology that had a lion's head, goat's body, and serpent's tail—has raised troubling questions: What new subhuman combination should be produced and for what purpose? At what point would it be considered human? And what rights, if any, should it have? "

It remains, though, that you are the one making the ultimate decision about another's existence. Depending on ones definition of "potential children", that could range from glimmer in your eye to late term abortion. If a person, with or without a living will, is in an uncommunicative state, it still falls to the decision of another whether to carry out those wishes.

If one is unable to speak for ones self, it inevitably falls to someone else to decide their fate. It's one of those sticky points where Randian philosophy crashes against the real world.

I am more worried about keeping slavery illegal at the moment.

"Years ago, the two applied for a patent for what they called a "humanzee," a hypothetical -- but very possible -- creation that was half human and chimp.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office finally denied their application this year, ruling that the proposed invention was too human: Constitutional prohibitions against slavery prevent the patenting of people.

Can someone who isn't a nazi read this and tell me what you think?

http://www.organicconsumers.org/Patent/human-animals.cfm

"Chinese scientists at the Shanghai Second Medical University in 2003 successfully fused human cells with rabbit eggs. The embryos were reportedly the first human-animal chimeras successfully created. They were allowed to develop for several days in a laboratory dish before the scientists destroyed the embryos to harvest their stem cells.

Why worry about humanzees when there are 100% human slaves all over the world right now? Including right here in L.A. They bust sweat shops here all the time, where illegal aliens are "working off the debt" they owe to the human smugglers.

I don't think mice should mate with humans. Do you?

"Human Born to Mice Parents?

For example, an experiment that would raise concerns, he said, is genetically engineering mice to produce human sperm and eggs, then doing in vitro fertilization to produce a child whose parents are a pair of mice. "

Except that until the embryos have brains (which are NONEXISTENT until about 8 weeks), they ARE just body parts.

Bodies such as those in a morgue, that have no chance to ever live again, that are used for organ donation are body parts, hopefully with their prior consent.

No. Not even in the Richard Gere sense of the word.

But wouldn't most of these discarded embryos be destroyed anyway?

They wouldn't have to be. Women can donate them to other women.
