Not just Chicago.
Care to talk about the current California legislature?
I challenge you to a "bottom of the barrel" stupidity contest...
The bigbox stores should avoid Chicago and live up to their threat.
It's that simple.
It's insane to pay a high school part time kid $13 an hour. He/she isn't worth it, and pushing carts or marking boxes with stickers isn't worth it.
Why should some jobs get higher pay than others? Why should a doctor get more than a school teacher? Why should an engineer make more than a road crew worker?
Chicago politics: The dead voting for the stupid.
Chicago has yuppies and the northside liberals. The old regular neighborhoods which are liveable are few.
If you were to travel extesively through Chicago and Cook County you would see endless blocks of vacant factories and
empty store fronts.
These dumb alderman should squeal with joy that any business
would take the risk of locating in these burned out areas.
It's not just the wages that are business killers but the cost of doing business i.E. liability insurances are multiple times more costly than locations in the "burbs".
Pure discrimination at it's worst. This will be tossed out by the first judge this goes in front of.
Good work Chicago! Not only are you hurting consumers and losing tax revenue, you are also putting people OUT OF WORK!
Its amazing how socio-marxists don't seem to make the obvious connection between raised minimum wages and lost jobs.
Thank God above I don't live there and never will.
These aldermen have apparently never met a payroll or held a real job in the private sector. Liberal democrats are always generous with other peoples money.
WalMart should respond by building lots of smaller 80,000 square foot stores, like their new "express" stores cropping up.
When this law has the effect of limiting competition, every Chicagoan will pay more for everything he buys. The excess amount of money they will pay will dwarf the amount of extra pay that winds up going to any worker. The return on the dollar will be less than 1%, with the rest of the money going into inefficiencies of operations.
This is emotional BS, not policy.
Somebody oughtta start a thread about which city has the absolute worst bottom of the barrel liberal government.
Big cities are filled with the "gimme something for nothing" crowd.
Wal-Mart doesn't have any stores in NYC, and I don't see how that has hurt them. If Wal-Mart bypasses Chicago from now on, I'm sure it will do just fine. The people of Chicago will just have to live with Wal-Mart's decision.
I suspect WalMart was not exactly busting down the door to get into Chicago. This may be a little "sour grapes" from the Town Fathers.
BTW, the one store Walmart build in the city, to open in the fall(maybe) used a real minority owned construction company that provided jobs. this city is so dumb.

End of story. They should have appealed the Santa Fe case. Now they don't have a leg to stand on. And this crap is going to spread like wildfire now.
A lot of cities have "living wage" that only applies to municipal employees or companies doing X amount of business with the municipality -- Miami, DC, others. Look for these cities to revisit the issue with an eye towards an identical big box angle.
You mean Leftists, high taxes, and no services? How about a Terrible Thirteen?
1. Detroit
2. Newark
3. Outer Boroughs, NY
4. New Orleans
5. East LA
6. Philly
7. Oakland
8. Memphis
9. DC
10. Chicago
11. Boston
12. San Fran
13. Bridgeport
Retail executives are realists, and the reality is that if they made a principled stand and refused to locate stores within city limits just beacuse of this law, they would face loud public accusations of racism from the usual suspects (part of the reason the law passed so easily - the aldermen know Jesse's got their back). Subsequently, they might lose more sales to boycotts than they would lose on extra wages if they just went ahead and built the stores.
