Please Peach... I have a great deal of respect for you, always have, with your posts... But that comment (we supply the PLO and Lebanon with the same thing) is really a stretch. Israel is a democracy, is on sound ground financially, the Hezzie rockets are doing such minimal damage... And outside of Egypt, which gets 3B annual aid, no one gets anywhere near what they get. They can use those funds to rebuild.
I like Blair - laying out how this started and how Hezbollah violated the U.N resolution, armed, planned and attacked.
I don't hear Blair calling for an immediate cease fire, or am I wrong.
israel hasn't demonstrated they want to go "all in" on this one. and they are prosecuting this war. we can't have Bush/Blair stand out there and say "hezbollah will be pursued until its destroyed", if they know that israel isn't willing to make the commitment needed to do that.
Blair: 3 essential steps.
1)Secy Rice going to region again tomorrow and package of proposals to get Israel and Lebanon to agree on what's necessary to happen for crisis to stop.
2) The meeting in the UN about the need for a stabilizing force will be brought forward.
3) We want to see a UN resolution as early as possible for cessation of hostilities. (Why - none of the resolutions mean anything). Blair continues: Provided the agreement is acted on.
The basis of UN 1559 two years ago that set what should happen in order to make sure that the southern part of Lebanon is not used by militias.
We want to see a cessation of hostilities and a framework for stabilization in long term.
We both believe it's important to take the opportunity to ensure the ME peace process is given fresh impetus toward two state solution that the international community wants to see.
