Sharks rebel at Brazil beach

Something horrifying is happening in the waters off Brazil.

Sharks are attacking surfers near the city of Recife at an unprecedented rate, scaring the locals and forcing the government to ban the sport at one of it’s most popular beaches.

Over the past decade, 45 people have been attacked by bull sharks in the region, 16 were deadly. And while these attacks are not unheard of, the fact the port city had recorded only one in the 75 years prior, is perplexing.

Are the sharks rebelling? Have they had enough of people overcrowding their home? Or is there something less sinister going on?

An international team of scientists, including the University of Florida’s Dan Huber, were sent to investigate the phenomenon for Discovery Channel’s Shark Rebellion — park of Shark Week.

“This is an incredibly packed beached — you pack that many people in the water and there’s a high chance, somebody’s going to interact with one of these animals. And bull sharks are just incredibly dangerous animals.”

While in Brazil, Huber and crew discovered a few reasons why the maneaters had suddenly become a major problem.

In the early 1990s, the government built a harbour which inadvertently changed the underwater ecosystem, forcing the bull sharks to search out new feeding grounds.

During this same time, an area slaughter house was secretly dumping tons of waste down the river and out on to the beaches.

“Literally the people who were surfing this beach were sitting directly on top of big bull sharks that were actively hunting … it’s just too dangerous.”

"one of it’s most popular beaches."

Gasp! Forget the sharks. Canada is in danger of sliding off the English grammar shelf, weighted down with unnecessary apostrophes.

It's not 'it's' in the case of possession, it's 'its.' We're doomed.

Hey - I will volunteer to go catch/kill sharks for them. Someone just needs to pay my way down there and I will do all I can to thin out the man-eater numbers (at least sharks).

(I know some of the menfolk here wanted SOME reason, ANY reason to post pictures of lovely Brazillian women in bathing suits.) ;)

That's okay. Some of the 'menfolk' would settle for pics of lovely Brazillian women without bathing suits!

(You just knew that one was comin', didn't ya!)

It isn't complicated. YOu go out on a 25' boat, put a bunch of chum in the water, and when the first bunch of sharks comes up to investigate, you kill a couple dozen of them with rifles, and the damned sharks will finish the job themselves. All anybody needs is for it to be legal.
