There is another article about Charlie Crist's college days wherein a photo of Crist appeared in a publication, Crist dressed as a mexican and Crist is saying now he had nothing to do with the photograph. Did they have photoshop back in the seventies? The Times was inferring or outright claiming that the photo of Crist was a racial slur.
