Kansas Church to Protest Velez Memorial
Church has drawn national attention for signs like "Thank God for IED's". Thursday service will not be peaceful like those held over the past week in Lubbock. Tuesday, August 1, 2006 A group of protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church of Topeka, Kansas, plan to protest a memorial service scheduled for Thursday evening to remember Lubbockite Andrew Velez.
22-year-old Velez died last Monday while serving in Afghanistan. According to a release posted last week on the Defense Department Web site, Velez died of non-combat-related gun fire. His brother, Freddy, died in 2004 while serving in Iraq.
The Kansas Church has drawn national attention protesting at military funerals, holding signs like Thank God for I.E.D.s (Improvised Explosive Devices) and God Hates Fags.
Shirley Phelps-Roper told KFYO News the death of Freddy in 2004 was a sign to his parents, that you didnt heed that event that warning.
She said her message to the parents is Im very sorry that you arranged your affairs to bring to condign wrath of God upon your head, not just your head, but the heads of your two sons.
Phelps-Ropers describes military funerals as a major patriotic pep rally.
The Churchs Web site states God Himself has now become Americas terrorist, killing and maiming American troops in strange lands for fag sins.
Roy Velez said last week I tremendously feel so proud of the president we have in office the war that were fighting to free and liberate Iraq and Afghanistan, I stand for.
During the most recent legislative special session, Governor Perry signed into law a bill co-sponsored by Senator Robert Duncan (R-Lubbock) that makes it illegal to protest within 500 feet of a funeral or funeral procession.
The service is scheduled for 6:15 p.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene, at South Loop 289 and Chicago Avenue.

Oh, THEM again!
Don't any of those people have jobs?
We-won't-tolerate-rude-behavior-in-a-man-on-the-Llano Estacado-PING
Are you still planning to attend?
Evil may know no bounds - but I bet it will recognize a nine-iron up side the head.
I'm going to do everything I can to be there.
Patriot Guard Riders ping!
Exactly. How do you think we went from being Texicans to being Texans? That Santa Anna got on our last nerve, that's how!
Yeah, but who does one sue when two bags of fire ants are surreptitiously dumped a few feet down the sidewalk from one's feet?
Anybody got a couple of gallon drums of ants around?
They were supposed to do that on July 2nd in Lancaster Ca, but were no-shows. As I arrived at the church I ran into a Sheriff's sgt I used to work with and asked if he'd go my bail if they did show up. He said he'd researched it and pointed out some traffic cones down the street. Said they were precisely measured, and if any protester got one inch over the line they'd go to jail.
The patriot riders were also on hand (and had lots of cash for bail money too. Rick Monday's wife was with the Patriot Riders, and had the flag her husband Rick had rescued at Dodger's Stadium 30 years prior with her. Semper Fi.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but, sadly, Lubbock doesn't have fire ants like the rest of Texas.
I'm glad you're going. Wish I could be there.
"Can I have 10,000 marbles, please?" ;-)
However, we do have rattlesnakes and mean women.
Whoa. You're kidding me!! No fire ants...
a Texas prairie without fire ants...
what on EARTH do they do for entertainment out there in Lubbock? Texas without fire ants is like a rose without thorns. Fire ants give us an excuse to dance in the middle of the pasture in broad daylight - without music even - around Central Texas.
Sometimes we even do that without fire ants...
