Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

"IDF commandos capture Hizbullah members after battle"
By YAAKOV KATZ, JPOST STAFF, AND AP

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "After several hours of intense fighting in and around the hospital in the eastern Lebanon town of Baalbek, which was built by Iran for the express purpose of treating Hizbullah operatives, IDF commando forces on Wednesday morning took a number of Hizbullah operatives captive.

An IAF helicopter dropped commando forces a short distance from the hospital late Tuesday night. The force was discovered as it moved towards the structure, where Hizbullah operatives were suspected of hiding. Several hours of gunfights ensued, and at least 10 Hizbullah guerrillas were reported killed.

Another force was helicoptered in to extricate the commandos and provide backup for the mission.

After inspecting the identification of everyone in the hospital, the IDF soldiers proceeded to arrest several Hizbullah officials, who were later transported back into Israel. The officials' names and positions in the organization were not revealed. The main target of the operation was Muhammad Yazbek, a senior figure in the organization. Yazbek was not in the hospital at the time of the raid.

No IDF soldiers were wounded in the operation, an army spokesperson told The Jerusalem Post."

"The Taliban's Chief of Kabul Suicide Operations Arrested"
By Waliullah Rahmani
August 1, 2006

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Recent unrest, bloody explosions and a spate of bomb attacks in Kabul raised fears that the Taliban, which has intensified attacks in southern and eastern Afghanistan, were expanding their campaign to Kabul. Yet, not long after the latest bomb attacks in the capital, Afghan security officials announced on July 13 the arrest of a Taliban commander who was in charge of the attacks in Kabul, in addition to arresting his operatives. Authorities identified him as Qari Hakim Mullah (Radio Liberty, July 13). The mastermind of suicide operations and bombings in Kabul, Qari Hakim Mullah was living in a house near the heavily-guarded presidential palace for three to four months. When he was arrested, police found an official Taliban decree, several hand grenades, remote controlled bombs and other explosives (Pajhwok Afghan News, July 13).

Qari Hakim Mullah is a 25-year-old Tajik who was born in Charikar city in northern Parwan province. He did not receive academic education, but had participated in madrassas and was taught basic Islamic studies; it is not known which madrasses he attended. During the Taliban regime, he was an active element in the government and was a soldier; his title during the rule of the Taliban, however, is not known.

Before being appointed as Kabul's Taliban insurgent chief, Qari Hakim Mullah was living in Pakistan, the head of the criminal branch of the Kabul police department, Ali Shah Paktiawal, told The Jamestown Foundation. Paktiawal said that a decree from the Taliban leaders was found with him and that Qari Hakim Mullah had been officially appointed as the chief of suicide and bombing campaigns in Kabul (Terrorism Focus, July 24)."

"Iranian Assistance to Hizbullah. Iran Revolutionary Guards Officer: Hizbullah Has Iran-Trained Diver, Naval Commando Units; We Have Constructed Command Rooms for Hizbullah; Iranian Martyrdom Forces Have Been Sent To Lebanon"

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On July 29, 2006, the London Arabic daily Al-Sharq Al-Awsat published a detailed article on assistance extended to Hizbullah by Iran's Revolutionary Guards, as reported by a high-ranking Revolutionary Guards officer who had trained Hizbullah naval units. According to the officer, Hizbullah has a diver unit and a naval commando unit. He further claims that Revolutionary Guards officers assisted Hizbullah in the July 14, 2006 firing of a C802 missile at an Israeli Navy ship, and had also helped Hizbullah construct underground facilities - including command and control rooms - which are being operated by Revolutionary Guards officers along with Hizbullah fighters.

In addition, Iranian news agencies have published a number of reports about groups of Iranian volunteers sent to Lebanon to aid Hizbullah in its fight against Israel.

The following are excerpts from these reports on Iranian assistance to Hizbullah."

"Authorities Break-up GSPC Terrorist Cells in Italy"

By Kathryn Haahr

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "On July 21, Italian officials announced that they had arrested four Algerian GSPC members because of their involvement in a variety of terrorist planning operations and terrorist support activities. The counterterrorist operation, code-named "Numidia," took place in the regions of Veneto and Lombardy, specifically in the cities of Brescia, Naples and Salerno. The Algerians, who had their cell headquarters in Venice, used their presence in the various cities to recruit new members from the illegal immigrants to whom they provided false documentation. Minister of the Interior Giuliano Amato considers the arrests of "significant relevance" because they demonstrate an extensive GSPC infrastructure established to plan terrorist activities against targets in Italy and in Iraq and Algeria in the name of the global jihad (Corriere della Sera, July 21; La Repubblica, July 21; El Mundo, July 21). The arrest of the Algerians is also important because the GSPC cell appears to be part of a larger GSPC network in Italy. According to security services reports, the current arrested Algerians were planning for and preparing to execute various terrorist activities against government targets in Italy, and against undefined government/military targets "overseas." In addition to planning terrorist operations, the arrested Algerians were engaged in a ring responsible for falsifying documents for terrorist activities, and for falsifying labor contracts facilitating clandestine immigration, likely to support their terrorist financing and other activities.

The arrest of the four Algerians in the three Italian cities coincides with previous arrests of GSPC members in the same cities and regions. In November and December 2005, Italian counterterrorist operatives arrested five Algerian nationals on suspicion of planning terrorist operations in Italy and the United States and for providing financial/weapons/logistical assistance to other jihadi cells in Europe (La Repubblica, November 17, 2005). The November arrests captured Yamine Bouhrama, whom Italian security services believe was the head of the Salerno cell, and who had contact with other GSPC cells in Milan, Brescia and Naples (La Repubblica, December 23, 2005).

Special intelligence investigations into the activities of Algerian Salafi-Jihadists reveal that GSPC members established inter-connected cells throughout Italy. The Viale Jenner mosque in Milan and its cultural center stand out as the epicenter of jihadi-related activities. Other cells are in Salerno, possibly Venice, Naples and Brescia. According to available information, the GSPC network operating throughout Italy is almost exclusively composed of Algerian nationals who immigrated to the country during the past decade. Italian security services' detention of and investigations into the activities of Salafi Islamists recently culminated in the exposure of a deep and wide network of GSPC cells throughout Italy (Corriere della Sera, November 17, 2005).

Although the cells in Italy appear to be composed exclusively of Algerian Salafi-Jihadists, their interaction with mixed Moroccan and Algerian cells in Spain, Norway and other countries demonstrates that the desire for global jihad has overcome the historical animosity between these two national groups. An additional finding of the Italian counterterrorism investigations is the extent of the communications between the GSPC cells in Italy and the Maghrebi-dominated networks in Spain and other European countries. Italian police have been investigating contacts between GSPC members in Italy and Algerian jihadists in Belgium, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Switzerland."

Philippines troops in Jolo clash
BBC News ^ | 08/01/2006

Posted on 08/02/2006 2:44:08 AM PDT by Republicain

Soldiers in the Philippines have clashed with suspected Islamic militants on the southern island of Jolo, according to the military.

Air strikes targeted a base thought to be used by the Abu Sayyaf group. Troops then engaged in heavy fighting with fleeing militants, officials said.

The Philippine authorities have been trying to flush Abu Sayyaf rebels from hideouts in remote island locations.

They are also searching for members of regional terror group Jemaah Islamiah.

A military statement said the assault came after Abu Sayyaf leader Khadafi Janjalani and unidentified Jemaah Islamiah militants were seen in the area.

Major-General Gabriel Habacon of the military's Southern Command said helicopters and gunships were used to drop bombs on the base.

"We've been tracking these terrorists for months," he said. "The time is now. We've located them and we're going to finish them off."

Five hundred soldiers were taking part in the assault, he said. Two had been injured.

Abu Sayyaf is the smallest and most violent militant group in the Philippines. The US has listed it as a terrorist organisation and says it has links to Al-Qaeda.

It is infamous for kidnapping Westerners and Filipinos, beheading victims and receiving large ransom payments. It was blamed for the bombing of a passenger ferry in 2004 which killed more than 100 people.

US-backed military offensives have considerably weakened the group to a few hundred rebels who are mostly on the run, according to the Philippine government.

A number of US troops are based in Jolo, where they are involved in counter-terrorism training.

"Driver accused of blast threat says he was taunted"
Saturday, July 29, 2006
Jim Nichols
Plain Dealer Reporter

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "A Detroit truck driver broadcast a threat to blow up another trucker and detonate a cargo of explosives in Cleveland on Thursday because other drivers were taunting him, the State Highway Patrol said Friday.

Sekou Fofana, 36, was arraigned Friday and held in Lake County Jail on inducing panic charges, said Trooper C.J. Coyne-Hall.

The Ivory Coast native and former New York City cab driver faces penalties for the fourth-degree felony charges ranging from probation to 18 months in prison, and fines of up to $5,000.

Fofana announced over a citizens-band radio that his semitrailer was loaded with explosives and he would "blow up Cleveland," another truck driver told the patrol.

Troopers and officers from five Lake County municipalities pulled over Fofana in Willoughby at 4:43 p.m. Authorities shut down Interstate 90 during rush hour, closing westbound lanes for more than an hour and eastbound lanes for 15 minutes. Trooper Jim Smith, the arresting officer, said traffic backed up for miles in each direction.

A bomb squad searched the truck and found only pallets of magazines."

"UK : Airport curb on US 'bomb flights'"
BBC News ^ | 08/01/2006

Posted on 08/02/2006 2:51:27 AM PDT by Republicain

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "US military flights carrying bombs to Israel will no longer use any civilian airports in the UK, the BBC has learnt.

The decision follows criticism of the use of Prestwick Airport, near Glasgow, to refuel flights suspected of carrying bombs to Israel.

It has emerged that in future only military airfields will be used.

The decision was reached after protests at the airport and discussions between various government departments, led by the Foreign Office.

US flights to Israel used RAF Mildenhall in Suffolk rather than Prestwick airport last weekend, prompting protests from about 30 peace campaigners at the military base.

BBC2's Newsnight has revealed that a total six aircraft carrying military supplies for Israel passed through UK airports over the weekend, one of them using RAF Brize Norton in Oxfordshire.

The programme said Defence Secretary Des Browne offered the use of the bases after Scottish Secretary Douglas Alexander protested to Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett about Prestwick being used.

BBC News understands that Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett last week pressed for all US flights through the UK to be suspended while hostilities in Lebanon continued.

But her concerns were rejected by Downing Street."

Hezbollah rocket hits West Bank (Palestinian Controlled)
Associated Press ^ | August 2, 2006

Posted on 08/02/2006 4:16:59 AM PDT by RWR8189

JERUSALEM - Hezbollah guerrillas fired more than 300 rockets from Lebanese border towns into northern Israel on Wednesday, Lebanese security officials said, including one that hit the West Bank for the first time.

Israel medics said that rocket hit near the town of Beit Shean, about 42 miles from the border, which makes it the deepest rocket strike into Israel so far. Witnesses said it struck between the West Bank villages of Fakua and Jalboun, causing no injuries.

Hezbollah said it was a Khaibar-1 rocket, which Israel claims is Iranian-made.

Israeli police and rescue services said at least 84 rockets were fired by Hezbollah at towns across northern Israel. The Israeli reports said at least seven people were wounded.

The discrepancy in the number of launches could not immediately be reconciled.

An Associated Press reporter standing on a hilltop overlooking the Lebanese border town of Kfar Kila, about 1 1/2 miles from Israel, saw outgoing rockets fly overhead and across the Israeli border.

They were fired from a region in southeastern Lebanon that includes Khiam, Marjayoun and Ibl el-Saqi — all within about three miles of the Israeli border and the scene of heavy ground fighting and artillery shelling in the past two days.

Plumes of black smoke rose from the hills above Kfar Kila and the nearby village of Adeisse, where the thud of Israeli artillery was constant. Shells were falling about once every two minutes.
