Threat Matrix: Daily Terror Threat - August 2006

Posted on 08/01/2006 9:51:52 PM PDT by nwctwx

:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Syria Tells Troops to Be Ready for Battle
(Full Story)

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has placed his military on full alert, citing "regional challenges", and vowed to continue supporting the "Palestinian and Lebanese resistance more than ever".

In a speech to mark the Syrian Army national day, Mr Assad said the volatile situation across the Middle East required "vigilance, preparation and readiness" and ordered all units of the armed forces to be on alert.

The comments were interpreted by Israel as a morale booster to the Syrian armed forces and not a call to battle. Israeli intelligence chiefs have assessed that Syria is not in the mood for an open war and is instead content to resupply Hezbollah guerillas in Lebanon.

One or two of the missing egyptians turned themselves into the police in Manville.

Just my thought:
And if these students came in on Egypt Air, someone I use to talk to said that Egypt Air doesn't do security checks for people leaving Egypt. IOW, they could have been coming here to deliver something. Turning themselves in could just be an easy ticket home.

Reports now suggest that some IDF forces have crossed the Litani River in the northern-most sector and are maneuvering around landmark known as "Beauford Castle" (aka Qal'at ash Sharif) enroute to An Tabatiyah, a major launching site of rockets into Qiryat Shemora.

The bottom line from the evil pond scum of the earth:

"But please give him this message, sir: Those who refuse to accept an invitation will not have a good ending or fate."

Iranians among Hizbollah combat dead: TV

Members of Iran's Revolutionary Guard have been found among Hizbollah guerrillas slain by Israeli forces in southern Lebanon, Israel's Channel 10 television reported on Wednesday citing diplomatic sources.

It said the Iranians were identified by documents found on their bodies, but gave no further details on how many were discovered or when. Neither the Israeli military nor Hizbollah representatives in Beirut had immediate comment on the report.

Iran, like fellow Hizbollah patron Syria, insists its support for the Shi'ite guerrilla group is purely moral.

Israel says many of the rockets being fired against its civilian and military targets are Iranian made, and that Hizbollah fighters taking on its forces trained in Iran. Washington also accuses Tehran of actively funding Hizbollah. Iran's Revolutionary Guards are traditionally very close to fellow Shi'ite Muslims in Hizbollah and were deployed in south Lebanon in the 1980s.

Behind Israel's Delayed Invasion

Throughout the Lebanon crisis, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has insisted that a return to the status quo ante is unacceptable — a radical Iran-backed militia could not be allowed to operate along Israel's northern border, as Hizballah was doing on July 12 when it captured two Israeli soldiers. But Israeli leaders are also mindful of the danger of restoring the status quo of six years ago, when Israel occupied southern Lebanon at the cost of a slow, but steady flow of casualties inflicted by Hizballah guerrillas that eventually forced its withdrawal.

A wariness over plunging back into what Israelis remember as their own Vietnam may help explain Israel's caution over expanding the ground war. And so even though the Israeli cabinet on Wednesday gave Prime Minister Ehud Olmert the authority to order a wider invasion, Israeli officials made clear that ordering such an move further north into Lebanon would wait a few days to see the outcome of the diplomatic wrangling at the U.N.

That same caution, in fact, helps explain one of the oft-obscured realities of Israel's military campaign — for all the talk of its incursion into south Lebanon, Israeli forces do not currently control very much of it, and they have intentionally limited their operations to something less than trying to hold ground. So President Bush referred to a fact not yet established on the ground when he insisted on Tuesday — over objections from Lebanon and other Arab governments — that Israel be allowed to maintain control of southern Lebanon until the arrival of an international force.

..snip..

The intensity of the fighting thus far has made clear that Israel would suffer substantial casualties in such an invasion; it would expect to lose as many as 100 more troops in the first week (taken as a proportion of the population, that's the equivalent of the U.S. losing 5,000) and probably more in the cleanup operations in the weeks that followed;

..snip..

RUMINT Alert

Yoni's sources report that Hizballah fired 3 missiles today in an attempt to hit Tel Aviv. Additional details not disclosable. He reports that these missiles were of a type not seen before and it is thought by the powers that be that this was an attempt to hit Tel Aviv.

I'm monitoring open source to confirm.

Special Terrorism Summary 08/09/06 Suppliment #1
Israel At War

Godzilla Observations
I said things would happen fast. Israel news reporting that IDF has driven north into Lebanon as far as Marjayoun, this is due north of the northern tip of Israel and over 10 km into Lebanon. This is a continuation of the northward trending arrow at the top of the map in my special summary earlier. This is good tank country, harder fighting reported to the west.

Anti-Israeli Cyberterrorist Attacks Planned for Tomorrow
By Evan Kohlmann

Participants on key Arabic-language Al-Qaida chat forums on the Internet have announced their intent to launch collective cyberterrorist attacks tomorrow, August 10, aimed at interrupting or denying service to other pro-Israeli websites--namely the "Internet Haganah" cyberterror watchdog site run by Aaron Weisburd. When I asked him what he thought of the purported threat, Aaron expressed strong skepticism that these efforts would produce any noticeable disruption in access to his site. He replied, "They have a reasonable chance of slowing down the responsiveness of one domain of the ten associated with the Internet Haganah web site."

More importantly, these would-be attacks represent part of a growing wave of similar defacement and denial of service attacks targeting various American bloggers and pro-Western websites.

*****The stolen laptop belonged to a special agent with the Department of Transportation's Office of the Inspector General investigating the use of fraudulent information to obtain pilot certificates or commercial drivers' licenses.*****

The laptop was stolen July 27 from a government vehicle in Doral, Florida. The Department of Transportation thinks the thief was after the computer, not the data. DOT will be sending affected parties official notice of the theft soon.
