Middle East crisis : Peretz sued in Morocco for terrorism

Israeli Defense Minister and labour party leader Amir Peretz was sued yesterday in Rabat by three well-known Moroccan lawyers for terror crimes in Lebanon.

The Moroccan lawyers, Khalid Sefiani, Abderrahim Jamai and Abderrahmane Benameur, known for their activism in human rights, organised a press conference in the headquarters of the Moroccan National Press Syndicate (SNPM) in Rabat to reveal the details of their initiative.

“It is not at all a symbolic act. We want Amir Peretz to pay for the war crimes he has committed in Lebanon,” Sefiani told the Moroccan paper Maroc Soir.

The lawyers' choice of the Rabat's appeal court was not fortuitous.

Since the adoption of the anti-terror law after the May 16 attacks, only Rabat's appeal court is able to judge terrorism cases.

Morocco has unceasingly voiced its indignation over the Israeli hostilities against the Lebanese civilians. Many local NGOs, political parties and civil actors are discussing ways to join efforts and support the Lebanese people in this crisis.

Sefiani explained that “The Zionist terrorist, Amir Peretz, was born in Sept. 9, 1952 in Bejaad. He kept his Moroccan nationality. He is still registered in the civil status register in Morocco.”

The lawyer added that “the Moroccan law authorises judicial prosecution against all Moroccans who committed an offense or a crime in Morocco or outside Morocco.”

“This criminal of war, unfortunately, holds the Moroccan nationality. A number of international human rights associations consider what is going on in Lebanon as a genocide carried out by the Israeli army, which executes the orders of the Israeli government members,” added Sefiani.

The Moroccan justice is expected to start an investigation on the issue soon.

“We have to know to what extent Amir Peretz is involved in the crimes committed against the Lebanese children, women and civilians. We have also to know the identities of all his accomplices,” said the lawyer, who is also the coordinator of the National Action Group supporting Iraq and Palestine.

“If Peretz is found guilty, the Moroccan justice must launch an international arrest mandate to arrest and deport him to Morocco,” concluded the lawyer.

Amir Peretz is an Israeli national. Morroccan courts have no jurisdiction over the acts of state of an official of another country's government.
