If Mary Mapes is looking for a way to fill her days, HDNet's upcoming "Dan Rather Reports" seems to have plenty of job openings left to fill. According to Dan Rather's new employer, the debut of "Dan Rather Reports" is scheduled for just two months from now, in October. Yet according to HDNet's Web site, the program is currently (as of August 3) seeking multiple producers, associate producers and editors -- basically, all of the off-camera reporters and production staffers who make a big TV news show work.

Besides the disgraced ex-CBS Evening News anchor, HDNet has announced just one hire for "Dan Rather Reports," tapping a longtime CBS veteran producer, Wayne Nelson, who will be the Executive Producer for new "investigative news" program. (Wasn't "investigative news" what got Rather into trouble in the first place?) Nelson's career highlights include stints at CBS's Dallas bureau, the CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes. The online classified ad for producers -- responsible for "developing, writing and producing quality television news stories" as well as "extensive investigative reporting" -- seeks candidates with "at least 5 years experience with television piece production, excellent writing skills and good story telling ability." Associate producers need just 3-5 years experience.
And they promise good benefits. Just don't send your resume using Microsoft Word -- HDNet specifically forbids this. Use plain text or a PDF instead.

Mark Cuban is a man of many identities: dot-com billionaire, Dallas Mavericks owner and prime-time benefactor of HDNet.

Billionaire Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban is making good on his promise to shake up journalism by funding Sharesleuth.com, an investigative business journalism site which he earlier described as "a blog that will do nothing but try to uncover corporate fraud." The site was founded by St. Louis Post-Dispatch reporter Christopher Carey, who has officially resigned to work on the site, which goes live next month. Cuban confirmed to PaidContent's Staci Kramer that platforms would include "the site, HDnet and HDnet films...and that's just the beginning."
On May 31st, Cuban wrote an entry on his blog called "Why Journalism Matters," calling on a new generation of sleuths, muckrakers, and would-be journos to challenge the form and generate the content they wanted to see. He invited journalism students "that can uncover stories others cant [sic] find and tell them in a way that others want to read" to contact him. PaidContent reports that Carey will be working with "stringers and input from a broad network of non-journalists who have an interest in the subject."

HDnet is a high definition channel carried by some cable systems in some areas.As I noted earlier,it's a channel that's found in very few homes in this country.
