Moscow slams US sanctions on its arms exporters

Moscow, Aug. 6 (PTI): Moscow on Saturday slammed the US decision to impose sanctions on two state-owned Russian arms exporting companies for their alleged cooperation with Iran saying the decision was "vengeance" for major defence contracts with Venezuela.

The US State Department on Friday announced sanctions against Russia's state arms exporter Rosoboronexport and State-owned aircraft manufacturer 'Sukhoi' among seven foreign companies, including an Indian company.

"Our companies stand accused of violating the Iran Non-Proliferation Act of 2000, an internal US legislation. We consider these actions by the US State Department unacceptable," a Russian Foreign Ministry statement said.

It said the Russian companies cooperating with other countries in the military-technical sphere were acting in strict compliance with international law, national legislation, including Russia's obligations on nuclear non-proliferation, and export control.

Russian Defence Ministry expressed "bewilderment" at the US decision and said it was "vengeance" for the recent major deals with Venezuela, State-run Radio 'Mayak' reported.

"Sukhoi has never supplied any fighter jets to Iran," the radio said, adding that during recent Russia visit of President Chavez, USD 3 billion defence contracts were clinched with Venezuela for the sale of 12 multirole Su-30MK jets and over 50 helicopter gunships as well as licensed production of a new model of Kalashnikov AK automatic assault rifles.

The US sanctions would negatively impact Sukhoi's regional jet project a rival of the Boeing, the radio said.

In a parallel statement, Rosoboronexport said the nomenclature of all its exports was public and did not in any way violate non-proliferation regimes.

We should be cutting off the dictatorships behind those so-called companies, not merely the companies themselves--GGG

Jeeze, I have to tell you... I'm really going to be laying in bed worrying about this tonight. Moscow is mad at us for some arms exporting sanctions.

We better start practing those "hide-under-your-desk" drills in case this starts World War III... or IV... or V... What World War are we on again?

==What World War are we on again?

The same World War (read: Cold War) we were in before the Soviet Union suddenly and mysteriously "collapsed" without any bloodshed whatsoever.

Is it my imagination, or is Russia auditioning for "Comedy Central"? This has to be some sort of parody. I know I'm laughing. I officially nominate Vlad Putin for "Dumbass of the Year".

Actually, Vlad Putin and Co. are very proficient at undermining the US and its allies.

Does this mean that the supply of inexpensive Russian firearms and ammunition are going to dry up? Does Wolf and Baurnal ammunition come through Rosoboronexport? I smell a run on all of the local gun shops with folks stocking up on ammo for their commie guns.

I'd say the contract with the Vens was an unfriendly act.

I read it. I'm sure you are aware that the Nation is a socialist/Commie rag. Is there something in particular I was supposed to conclude by reading the article???

No I don't think so. Rosoboronexport is for inter-govermental sales. The private firms supposed deal directly with manufactories.
